Tim McGraw: Redefining Life on the Road

McGraw performing for the U.S. Air Force in 2003

Tim McGraw is redefining life on the road and opens up to Men’s Journal in their December issue, on newsstands tomorrow, about his workout. The 48-year-old country star traded late-night boozing on tour for intense daily workouts with the crew; “We do high-energy shows – if I don’t go work out, you can tell a difference.”
“When I’m on tour, I work out with about 10 guys from my band, crew, and security. Or rather, I start the workouts with 10 guys. By the time I’m done, only three are still going. I got the athletic gene from my father [major league pitcher Tug McGraw], and I played every sport in high school and a lot in college. But I never, you know, exercised. Lifting weights and training is a recent thing for me.”
“I started when I hit my early forties. It wasn’t easy to look the way I wanted to look. Stuff didn’t fit, and late-night beer sessions didn’t help. I found myself trying to camouflage things, and every evening I’d try to find something I’d look halfway decent in onstage. I decided if I wanted to play music for a long time, and compete with the younger artists coming up, and be around for my grandkids, then I needed to take care of myself.”

McGraw is also known for his faith -- another healthy habit that redefines him.

Nashville Skincare Reps Sponsor Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraiser

Here is an event near and dear to my heart. Skincare consultants in the Nashville area are joining their teammates across the U.S. and Canada in a benefit to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research.

On Oct. 21, 2015, the local leaders will host RF4aCause, a night of cocktails and conversations about breast cancer, skin cancer and prevention to benefit the The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). As someone who both lost her mother to melanoma and who has personally suffered the ravages of skin cancer in multiple areas all over my face, this is an event I am behind 100%.

The Nashville event will take place this Weds. night in Brentwood at 6:30. The event is free with your RSVP, and cocktails and appetizers will be served. The Brentwood fundraiser is part of a larger network of international events.

BCRF has A+ rating from Charity Watch, and 88% of money raised goes directly to research and 3% funds breast cancer awareness.International R+F Teammates will be hosting over 100 events across the US & Canada starting on Weds., Oct. 21. Ten percent of orders placed during these events will benefit breast cancer research.

I encourage all my Nashville readers to connect with me to RSVP for this great charity event on Weds. night.  To find an event near you, please email skinhealthbeauty1@gmail.com. If you cannot attend, you can make a personal donation to the BCRF donation page.

How the Deadly All-Natural Movement Killed My Mother

My mother (R) used all-natural products in the 1980s

People are so strange. They want to look for a hidden motive as to why people are passionate or outspoken about certain topics. In my case, because I work in skin care, many people want desperately to make the assumption that I am outspoken about the harmful lobbying, fear mongering and dangerous misinformation spewed by the "all natural" movement because I want to sell them a jar of something.

Allow me to enlighten you.

In the early 1980s, my mother developed a small lesion on her lower leg a couple of inches above her ankle. An avid reader of "Prevention Magazine" and a subscriber to the early days of the "all natural" movement, my mother made the fatal decision to treat her lesion with "natural" home remedies from her kitchen and garden. The lesion got larger over time, but although I begged her many times to go see a doctor, she insisted that "all natural" was the way to go.

No, no it's not.

No amount of honey, lemon water, olive oil, essential oils, baking soda and even bacon grease (which was a recommendation in something she read) worked. I tried making an appointment for her but she cancelled. I tried getting her doctor to call her but was informed that it was not legal for a doctor to "solicit." Finally, after the lesion was larger than the width of a pencil eraser, I called her doctor's office, said my mother wanted to speak to Dr. Gregory and then called down the hall and told her she had a phone call. She was so flustered when she realized what I had done that she stammered out she had something on her leg she needed to get checked and made the appointment. I paid the price of her anger until the day of the appointment when we discovered it was melanoma cancer which had spread up her leg. She had all the fleshy part of the inside of the affected leg removed from her knee to her ankle almost to the bone.

Value of Clinical, Medical Products & Procedures

Thanks to the drugs and "unnecessary surgeries" the "all natural" movement puts down, she did in fact live almost 10 years after that, and some of them were good years, but the melanoma had metastacized into her lymph nodes, and her life from that day on was a series of waiting for the other shoe to drop, and indeed, it kept dropping. Next came removing more tissue from her leg, removing the lymph nodes in her groin, then the lymph nodes in her abdomen. She had chemotherapy more than once which slowed the progress of the cancer, and she went into remission two or three times for a year or more. However once the cancer reached her abdomen, from there it slowly spread into her other organs and finally into her brain. She died in 1991.

Misinformation Spun by the All Natural Movement

I have read and researched the claims of the "all natural" movement since then and been shocked to see how many relatively intelligent people believe them -- because "all natural" SOUNDS good. They want to believe those crazy articles that claim you can turn to your kitchen pantry to cure what ails you. These articles are rarely documented and hardly ever include any reputable clinical trials.

Worse, many of them are spun by the big, secretive all-natural lobbyist group that calls itself the Environmental Working Group which basically makes up its own data and trials, and then quotes itself likes it's a separate source on its spin-off sites like Skin Deep or CLEAR, etc., where the misinformation is then picked up by all the copy-and-paste mom and pop "all natural" blogs where it is then disseminated to sheeple on Facebook through countless memes. So what harm does it do to put food on your face and use essential oils instead of medicine?

A lot of harm.

The "All Natural" Placebo Effect

It's a placebo. It makes you "feel" like you are doing something when you might just be masking a real problem. People die from this all the time, but you never read headlines like "All Natural Movement Kills Again." The cause of death is listed as cancer, heart failure, diabetes, kidney failure, stroke, etc. but the REAL culprit is the "all natural" movement that convinced these poor people that they could treat themselves at home with home remedies.

The "All Natural" Fear Effect

The "all natural" movement, compliments of the EWG, is behind the "vaccines cause autism" scare, behind "sunscreens will kill you," "baby bottles are toxic" and countless other hoaxes that have been disproven by the medical and scientific community but which sheeple want to still believe because the "all natural" movement is still spinning the yarns! The "all natural" movement is sounding the alarm about GMOs and chemtrails in spite of absolutely no evidence that genetically modified food is harmful and ample proof that there is no such thing as a chemtrail!!!

Three things I know.

  1. We have been eating GMO food since the 1980s and are living longer, healthier lives than our parents and grandparents
  2. Many chemtrail advocates claim chemtrails are relatively new, first appearing in the 1980s or 1990s depending on which quack you listen to. Before that they claim all you saw in the sky were long, straight contrails. But in the early 1960s I asked my father, who had served in the Army Air Force, why some airplanes left long, thin, straight lines of what I thought was smoke, and why some left fuzzy, fluffy spreading plumes of "smoke." My father explained that it was condensation, like exhaling on a cold night, and he said depending on how high the plane was, and whether it was traveling through hot or cold, or dry or moist air, the trails of condensation could look completely different. His science lesson still holds up today.
  3. Had my mother sought clinical, medical help in 1982 instead of the quackery of the "all natural" movement, she could have lived 20, 30 or more healthy years instead of 10 years in and out of the hospital. But thanks to the medical and clinical treatments she received, she did live almost 10 years longer as opposed to the 6 months she was originally given.

By the way, the reason I always put "all natural" in parenthesis is because unless you grow it in your own garden, the stuff called "all natural" usually goes through some kind of processing. Essential oils and olive oils, for instance,  often use chemicals in the refining process.  So do the makeups and cosmetics that frequently call themselves "all natural."

Let's face it, the "all natural" movement is simply not what it is quacked up to be. It's just another BIG BUSINESS out to scare you and take your money.

ASK KATHRYN: Plumping Wrinkled Skin Above the Lips

A reader asks: What should I use to plump the wrinkled skin above my upper lip?

Combining the new Acute Care patches with Lip Renewing Serum and the micro-needle skin roller is the perfect combo for the lips and skin around the lips. The patches will start FILLING the wrinkles almost immediately, just like an injectable.

The roller and serum will help REBUILD your lips and your upper lip area over time with consistent use. If you combines them, you will get faster, better, longer lasting results. Toss in our lip microdermabrasion, and your lips will be smoother, fuller with less wrinkles around them.

ASK KATHRYN: What Works on Chigger Bites?

Recently while out hiking I got eaten up by chiggers. My right leg had about 16 bites from the tiny but annoying insects between my calf and my ankle just on the inside with a few more bites up to the knee and on the other side.

I was complaining about it on Facebook and took a photo of my ugly leg when it dawned on me I should try SOOTHE for sensitive skin on it. After all, SOOTHE got rid of my rosacea.

Within 5 minutes of applying SOOTHE the itching was substantially reduced, and the red spots and swelling began to disappear in about an hour. After that, I had no more itching and the bites continued to reduce in swelling and the redness was gone by the next day.

If you are a victim of lawn pests like chiggers, ticks, fleas, gnats and other stinging/biting pests, you can basically choose to stay indoors, wear a pesticide, treat your yard, or treat your skin.

Ask me about SOOTHE for sensitive skin, rosacea, psoriasis, eczema and even chigger bites!

ASK KATHRYN: Acne & Chicken Pox Scars

A reader writes: "What products would work well for scars on the face? A woman has some chicken pox scars from long ago & wants to get rid of them."

There are some effective things you can do about acne & chicken pox scars on the face.

I recommend the micro-needle roller and night renewing serum along with the Redefine Regimen or Reverse Regimen work well on both acne and chicken pox scars. Adding the Macro Exfoliator, which removes 5 million dead skin cell in 5 minutes, resurfaces the skin and helps reduce and remove facial scarring even more.

National Dog Appreciation Day: Dogs and health - Nashville Skin Care Examiner

 Happy National Dog Appreciation Day!

Wednesday, Aug. 26 is National Dog Appreciation Day, and Tennessee has been ranked the #4 most "Dog Happy" U.S. state, according to the Milo's Kitchen 'Dog Happy' Survey.

Other studies indicate that being a "Dog Happy" state should make Tennessee a healthier state, and yet Nashville was recently ranked #5 'Unhealthiest City' in America.

I have been a dog lover ever since I was rescued by a papillon 20 years ago. I didn't think I wanted or needed a dog, but she quickly showed me the error of my ways, so I can attest to the many health benefits of being owned by a dog.

After my first papillon, Miss Katy,  died at 17, I was devastated by her loss and quickly got another little dog for my emotional well being and even physical wellness.

Transformation Tuesday: Watch My Eyes

I used the Acute Care wrinkle patches last year with good results.... except after I used the patches and my lines filles in, my friends tried to tell me I hadn't had wrinkles in the first place!

So I had the rather radical decision to stop using the patches for five long months and allow my body to  metabolize the peptides and hyaluronic acid out of my system so my wrinkles would return, as seen in the photo on the left.

My timing could not have been better as we have a BOGO: Boy One Get One FREE special on the patches going on in August, so I was able to resume using my patches at a 50% discount!!! The photo on the right shows me with my first patch on.

Stay tuned as I chronicle the changes around my eyes from using the Acute Care patches. Each patch contains only two ingredients, peptides and hyaluronic acid, and a new semiconductor technology hardens the two liquids into "liquid needles" that gently fill your wrinkles while you sleep. Using a pair of patches every Monday, Wednesday and Friday produces long lasting results, much like using other injectables. Find out why TotalBeauty says the Acute Care patch is "Better than Botox."

Right now I am offering some freebies if you join my team by the end of August!

Connie Britton talks diet, age, beauty as NewBeauty's Summer/Fall cover girl

"NewBeauty's" Summer/Fall 2015 issue is on newsstands now and boasts the beautiful Connie Britton, star of ABC’s hit show "Nashville," on the cover. In the issue, Britton shares the biggest beauty mistake she’s ever made, what her mother taught her and why she loves being 40+.

Connie Britton at the Golden Globes 2013.

“I am really happy where I am," says Britton about being in her 40s. "Your 40s are a great decade to be in. You sort of live your whole life worrying about the "Big 40." But, for me, it is a full and fruitful time. My body is still in good shape, but it’s more about the wisdom for me. If you serve your spirit, all of a sudden at this age, life is less scary, less overwhelming. Maybe that’s the whole secret to life. It’s not that bad getting older, you can enjoy it."

Britton, who is currently working on "American Crime Story with Ryan Murphy" playing Faye Resnick discusses today's expectations for women’s beauty in the article: “Everything [people] see from Hollywood, on television, in movies and in magazines is doctored, it’s not real. I really don’t want to feed into that. The best advice I can give to any woman, or any young girl, or even my younger self, is to not give in to that pressure. Find your own value. Know your body. Know what works for you. There is so much pressure, but we do have a choice. It has to be your life you are living. I try to carry that philosophy into every aspect of my life.”

“I can go for days without washing my hair, and people freak out about that," Britton comments about her famous mane of hair. "It gets better from the natural oils that make it shiny and make it do what I want it to do.”

About dieting the actress, who is often seen on set with a salad when the rest of the cast is enjoying a catered meal, states, “My philosophy on life impacts my diet. I don’t want to create a vision of a woman who is starving herself, but I also like to feel good, so I tend to stick to certain healthy foods that do that. But, I love cake, and I eat it sometimes—even though I don’t always feel so great afterward.”

Britton moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 2012 when she signed to star as Rayna Jaymes in the ABC musical drama "Nashville."

Bruce Caitlyn Jenner vs. Healthy Body Image

"VanityFairJuly2015" by Source (WP:NFCC#4). Licensed under Fair use via Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:VanityFairJuly2015.jpg#/media/File:VanityFairJuly2015.jpg

Typically this blog does not cover current events and controversial topics. In the past, Bruce Jenner would only have made this blog back in his Olympic days as a health and wellness icon and Caitlyn Jenner would not be a topic this blog normally address. However, because of the overwhelmingly positive response the media is giving this topic, I feel like I need to speak out.

In recent years, if a model loses weight to get on the cover of a fashion magazine or has parts of herself Photoshopped, it is offensive to our society. Blog posts, Facebook images, and YouTube videos are devoted to the perceived injury the practice of airbrushing and Photoshopping models does to the psyches of young girls because it might give them unrealistic body image expectations.

Thigh gap is highly criticized as not being a healthy body image with many memes about how unrealistic thigh gap is found on social media. If a model or actress loses weight, they are often the subject of harsh criticism from the Body Image Police. Even Barbie dolls have been the focus of cultural ire because in some eyes they do not support a healthy body image.

And yet if a man alters the sexual identity of his body, it is now celebrated. While Barbie dolls, skinny models and thigh gap are seen as bad influences on society because of their alleged negative impact on body image, undergoing extensive and doubtless expensive treatments to change a body from male to female is lauded as courageous??? What is wrong with this picture?

For those who are appalled I would even mention Caitlyn Jenner's "transformation" because it is "his business what he does with his body, " bear in mind -- Bruce Jenner is making a ton of money on his transgender transformation. He is doing it publicly in magazines and TV shows in an ostentatious manner that begs comments. He is making it a publicity stunt which is another bad example for impressionable young minds.  Nothing about the Jenner sex change supports a healthy body image.

Walking -- It's Good for What Ails You!

Unless you have an unusual health issue or injury, walking is just good for you. Walking is obviously good for fitness, but according to numerous articles and studies, walking relieves stress and promotes mental health.

Walking and hiking are both low impact. Low-impact exercise doesn't cause injury to joints. In fact, walking actually helps to increase bone density and reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

According to the American Heart Association, walking also reduces the risk of coronary heart disease; improves blood pressure, blood sugar levels and blood lipid profile; maintains body weight and lower the risk of obesity; reduces the risk of breast and colon cancer; and reduces the risk of non-insulin dependent (type 2) diabetes.

In addition to all these great health benefits, a stroll in your neighborhood is a good way to bond with your spouse, kids or pet, meet your neighbors, and catch a beautiful sunset. So what are you waiting for? Lace up your walking shoes and get out there!
