New Poll Reveals Which Hazards Increase During Holidays

New Poll Reveals Which Hazards Increase During Holidays
Allstate finds homeowners not quite prepared for holiday home hazards

Festive, joyful and togetherness are just a few words that come to mind when thinking about the holidays. However, a new Allstate poll shows “hazardous” should be at the top of the list, too.
Allstate’s fourth annual national holiday home hazards survey The 2016 Allstate Holiday Home Hazards survey was conducted by FTI Consulting from October 6-16, 2016. The survey was conducted among N=1,015 adults (home/condo owners and renters) and an oversample of N=224 first-time home or condo owners who purchased their very first home in the past year.
reveals homeowners as well as renters aren’t prepared as they could when it comes to protecting their homes during the holidays. Some of the most common pitfalls are leaving temptations for “porch pirates” and sharing too much on social media. (See details below). And in Southern States* specifically, Allstate found the following hazards have the largest spikes during the holiday seasonPercentage change based on holiday season versus non-holiday season homeowners, condo and renters claim frequency for *Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana and Mississippi during the three-year period of Jan. 15, 2013-Jan. 15, 2016, with the holiday season from Nov. 15-Jan. 15. Only hazards that occurred at least 10 times during the three-year period, with positive and statistically significant percentage changes, were included.   :
  1. Bursting Pipes from Freezing
  2. Fire originating from a fireplace
  3. Smoke damage from Kitchen
  4. Ice Dams
  5. Glass breakage
“With so much focus on shopping, gift giving and making holiday meals and other preparations, people may overlook simple, but important safety steps to protect their homes,” said Steve Blume, Allstate agency owner. A few precautionary measures can better protect the hosts and their guests:

  • Test smoke alarms and/or carbon monoxide detectors
  • Inspect home interiors and exteriors (including windows, roofs, gutters and chimneys) for leaks and damage.
  • Keep your home heated above 65 degrees to prevent pipes from freezing
  • Limit the number of lights per outlet or power strip to prevent a live Christmas tree fire.
  • Place a live tree away from heat sources to minimize fire risk
Not taking proper precautions can lead to costly damage. Allstate claims data shows the median cost of bust pipes from freezing was $5,500, fire-related fires was $10,149 and electrical fires was $22,683
Holiday trips also may become holiday home hazards as travelers often leave behind opportunities for theft.
  • Consider stopping your mail and/or newspaper delivery before taking a holiday trip.
  • Ensure all doors and windows are locked before leaving on a holiday trip (Only about 77% of homeowners and renters plan to do this).
  • Lock all vehicles left in their driveway or garage.
Think no one will notice you’re not home? Think again. Allstate found the following happens more frequently during the holidays:
  • Missing Property from garage increases 37% during the holidays (median cost $1,697)
  • Burglary increases 6% (median cost $2,911)
  • Theft from unlocked vehicles increases 2% (median cost $1,177)
SOCIAL MEDIA SHARING – Oversharing can send a message to criminals that a home may be unoccupied. Those who post on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and other popular sites should think twice before:
  • Sharing pictures of yourself at holiday travel destinations
  • Sharing details of travel itinerary, such as being at the airport or on their way home
  • Showing off presents
Taking a few simple steps can be the difference between the holidays being happy and memorable for all the right reasons.

https://us.vocuspr.com/Publish/3099793/vcsPRAsset_3099793_120823_c2742960-b4bc-426f-96db-8bfc547b53e9_0.PNG

Registration is open for the 2017 Fight for Air Climb in Nashville

If the stairs don't take your breath away, the view from the top of the Fifth Third Center will. The American Lung Association in Tennessee is holding its annual Fight For Air Climb in Nashville on Saturday, February 18, 2017, and they're looking for hundreds of participants to help them in their fight for clean air for everyone!

On Event Day, climbers, walkers, runners, firefighters, first responders and supporters of the American Lung Association will climb Fifth Third Center in downtown Nashville. The participants will challenge themselves to climb 29 flights of stairs, 644 steps, while raising money to help support the fight against lung diseases.

The registration fee for the Fight for Air Climb is $25 through December 31, 2016; and $35 after January 1st. For $45, thrill seekers can take part in the new Power Hour Challenge, in which 20 advanced climbers will racer up and down the stairs as many times as possible in one hour. In addition, all participants need to raise a minimum of $100 to participate and can quality for a variety of incentive prizes based on the amount of money they raise.

Lung diseases such as asthma and COPD cannot yet be cured, but they can be managed. Making sure people know what's needed to take control of these lung diseases is one of the American Lung Association's top priorities. Thirty five million Americans are living with chronic lung diseases such as asthma, lung cancer and COPD; lung cancer is America's #1 cancer killer.

You can climb as an individual or form a team with family and friends or one's company. Anyone interested in more information about the Climb, participation in the Climb or in making a donation to support this event, please visit the website at www.ClimbNashville.org.

Thanksgiving & Holiday Eating Tips

With Thanksgiving just around the corner. Focus on the Family has come up with some tips to help you make Thanksgiving dinner more healthy and enjoyable.

Here are just a few healthy eating tips compliments of Focus on the Family. These would apply to the holidays as well as Thanksgiving:
  • Provide nutritious appetizers and dishes. Allow guests and family to nibble on vegetables before dinner. Also, you might be surprised that many side dishes are quite delicious even without gobs of canned cream soups and loads of carbs and fat.
  • Don't wait until dinner to eat. A healthy breakfast and snacks before the big meal can help keep you from overindulging.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water before and during the feast. It will help you feel full and replaces high calorie drinks.
  • Have some sweets—in moderation. Healthy eating doesn't mean you'll never again eat anything you like. But it does involve not eating half a pie. Sample the sweets, just don't gorge on them.
Special thanks to the good folks at Focus on the Family for these timely Thanksgiving tips.    For more Thanksgiving reading, check out the Focus on the Family article Seven Days of Gratitude

ASK KATHRYN: What is Multi-Med Therapy and How Does It Work?

You may have heard me refer to Multi-Med Therapy when referring to the products I represent. If you are wondering what exactly Multi-Med Therapy means and how it works, here is some info you will enjoy!

Multi-Med Therapy is a system of usually 2, 3, or 4 products used together. It combines the right ingredients, in the right formulations and in the right order to achieve the best results.

For instance, our regimen for age spots contains skin lightening ingredients which brighten dull skin, improve tone and texture, and add radiance to the skin. The Reverse regimen exfoliates skin to remove dead skin cells to assist cell turnover and remove dullness. It also protects against future sun damage with the Reverse broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen. Using the products together as a regimen will lighten excessive darkness to reduce and even eliminate brown spots, and uneven pigment.

Our other regimens work in a similar way. Specific ingredients are layered in such a fashion that they enhance the strength and effectiveness of the other ingredients. All ingredients and combinations of ingredients are tested for safety and efficacy so you know you are getting the best ingredients, applied in the right order, and formulated to work together for maximum effectiveness. That's how Multi-Med Therapy works!

However, some ingredients can cancel out the effectiveness of other ingredients or even make them mildly toxic. The skincare industry is unregulated except for products designated as "premium" skincare. That's why it is important to buy from a company you trust and always make sure you are buying clinically tested, regulated, premium skincare products.

Ask me about amazing premium clinical skincare products and start your way to clearer, healthier skin today! Join me on Facebook or email skin_and_health@yahoo.com for more info! I would love to help you have more beautiful skin!

Congress Urged to Combat Zika Virus

U.S. Health Crisis Looming: Malteser International Americas Urges Congress to Reconvene to Combat Zika Virus

Put life-saving work before recess

In a second letter sent to Congressional leaders and the Florida delegation today, Miami-based humanitarian organization Malteser International Americas has called on the U.S. Congress to cut short its summer recess to pass Zika virus prevention and treatment funding without further delay.

"We teach our children to eat their vegetables before they can have dessert. We tell them to finish their homework before meeting up with friends or playing on their smartphones. The protocol for Congress should be no different," said Ravi Tripptrap, Executive Director of Malteser International Americas. "The golf course isn't going anywhere, but the Zika virus is on the move in the United States, first in Florida and now in Illinois. Congress must return to work now."

Malteser International Americas has been on the front lines of the Zika outbreak in northern Colombia since it first became a threat to pregnant women and children, providing Zika Prevention Kits and educating those in the poorest, most forgotten regions where new cases of the mosquito-born disease are diagnosed on a daily basis.

Since the World Health Organization declared the Zika outbreak a global health emergency in February, Congress has taken a backseat, "Not In My Back Yard" approach. With non-travel related cases confirmed in Miami earlier this week and the announcement on Thursday of 46 cases confirmed in Illinois, 8 of whom are pregnant women, it is imperative that Congress act NOW. Zika is being carried into their backyard by mosquitoes, and their most important responsibility is to protect the health and safety of United States citizens.

In the meantime, people living in potentially affected areas shout consider investing in good mosquito repellent.

How to Remove Unwanted Body Hair with At-Home Waxing

With beach season just around the corner, you might be thinking about waxing to achieve a hair-free body before summer. Unlike shaving, waxing can leave skin feeling smooth and soft for many weeks, but only if you do it properly, say dermatologists.

“At-home waxing can be an affordable method for hair removal, but it’s important to take precautions,” said board-certified dermatologist Jessica J. Krant, MD, FAAD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology, SUNY Downstate Medical Center. “Never wax sunburned or very sensitive skin, and don’t wax if you have taken isotretinoin in the last six months. Also, it may be a good idea to leave Brazilian waxes to the professionals, since the skin in that area is particularly delicate.”
For the best technique and results, Dr. Krant recommends the following tips:
  1. Ensure optimal hair length: Before waxing, make sure your hair is about one-fourth to three-fourths of an inch long. If hair is longer, trim it to a shorter length using safety scissors so that waxing will be less messy and painful.
  2. Avoid retinoid creams before waxing: Avoid using over-the-counter skin care products containing retinol and prescription retinoids two to five days prior to waxing your face to avoid removing skin along with your hair.
  3. Reduce discomfort: Since waxing can be painful for some people, consider ways to reduce discomfort. Taking over-the-counter pain medication, such as ibuprofen, or applying cold packs to the skin about 30 minutes before waxing may help.
  4. Wash and dry the area: Before waxing, gently wash the area you’re about to wax to remove dirt, dead skin cells and skin care products. Afterwards, dry your skin thoroughly. Clean, dry skin allows the wax to adhere properly.
  5. Warm the wax: Follow the directions on the package, and always test the temperature of the wax by applying a small amount to the inside of your wrist. It should be warm, but not hurt or burn.
  6. Apply the wax: Apply the wax to a small section of your skin with unwanted hair. For the best results, always spread the wax in the direction of hair growth.
  7. Apply the cloth strip: Once the wax is applied, place the cloth strip over the wax and press down firmly. Leave the cloth on for two to three seconds.
  8. Remove the cloth strip: To remove, hold your skin taut with one hand and use your other hand to quickly pull off the cloth in the opposite direction of hair growth. If you’re waxing a tricky spot to reach, such as the underarms, consider asking a friend or relative to help you.
  9. Soothe your skin: After waxing, soothe your skin by applying cold packs if you have pain, avoiding hot baths and showers, wearing loose clothing and applying moisturizer that won’t clog your pores. Look for moisturizers labeled “oil-free” or “non-comedogenic.”
“If you follow the instructions, at-home waxing is a safe and effective way to remove unwanted body hair," said Dr. Krant. “However, if you experience redness or swelling after waxing that lasts more than two days, see a board-certified dermatologist.”
These tips are demonstrated in “Hair Removal: How to Wax,” a video posted to the AAD website and YouTube channel. This video is part of the AAD’s “Video of the Month” series, which offers tips people can use to properly care for their skin, hair and nails. A new video in the series posts to the AAD website and YouTube channel each month.
