What is Rodan + Fields Reverse and how does Reverse MultiMed therapy work?
Reverse is a complete Multi-Med therapy skincare system created by the dermatologists at Rodan + Fields which combines prescription medicines at non-prescription strength with active cosmetic ingredients to repair and protect hyper-pigmented, sun-damaged skin. Reverse is used to treat people with age spots, hormonal patchiness and melasma.
Reverse for Hyperpigmentation, Sun Spots, Age Spots, Liver Spots, Lentigines & Melasma
Over the course of our lives, sun bathing, tanning beds and repeated sun exposure without sunscreen can make skin dull and leave sun spots, age spots, liver spots, hyperpigmentation, lentigines or melasma by the time we are in our late twenties and older. The accumulated dark pigment is several layers deep into the skin. Over time, these layers of dark pigments begin to appear on the surface of the skin, but much more dark pigment is below the surface. A black light can reveal the next layer of dark pigmentation.
Reverse Multi-Med Therapy
The Reverse MultiMed Therapy regime combines the right ingredients, in the right formulations and in the right order to lighten excessive darkness, brown spots, and uneven pigment. The Reverse MultiMed regime contains skin lightening ingredients including hydroquinone which brighten dull skin, improve tone and texture, and add radiance to the skin. The Reverse regime exfoliates skin to remove dead skin cells to assist cell turnover and remove dullness. It also protects against future sun damage with the Reverse broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen.
Reverse Regime Results
With continued use, the Reverse regime helps skin look more clear and luminous over time, doing away with the need to wear foundation. Over weeks to months the multi-med combination of medicines and active cosmetics have been clinically proven to reduce discoloration, dullness, and dark marks. While everyone's skin is different, most people achieve maximum benefit and see a more radiant, youthful complexion within 2-6 months, depending on how severe the original discoloration was. The goal of the Reverse regime is to get the skin's tone back to it's original tone so that customers no longer need to wear foundation. At that point use of the Reverse cream can be discontinued.

Why Is MultiMed Therapy Better for Your Skin?
Why MultiMed Products & Therapy are Effective
To better understand why the MultiMed products are more effective than combining various individual products, it is important to understand two things: most people have more than one skin issue, and chemical ingredients work differently in different combinations.
Most People Have More than One Skin Issue
I have had skin cancer on my face off and on for several years. As part of my treatment, my dermatologist prescribed a tretinoin product, Renova. When I developed roascea, I was prescribed Metrogel, which has the active ingredient metronidazole. More recently, a couple of dark pigment spots appeared on my face, and my dermatologist recommended an over-the-counter product with hydroquinone.
Active Ingredients in Daily Skin Care Products
Like most women, I also use a cleanser, toner, moisturizer and sunscreen, all with different ingredients, and I have considered adding an eye cream to my routine, probably one with dimethicone. All of these products contain different active ingredients, and most of them are applied at night. I wouldn't dream of tossing all these products in a blender and slathering them all on at once, because these products have different specific ingredients for specific reasons... but how do all of these active ingredients work together when applied to the skin, and which one should go on first?
Many Ingredients Are Potentially Toxic
The hydroquinone found in many skin lightening products has been listed by the FDA as a potential carcinogen. The metronidazole in my rosacea medication is "reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen" according to Wikipedia. Tretinoin, which is in my Renova, can cause birth defects, and even dimethicone, one of the most widely used skin care ingredients, is listed as possibly carcinogenic on a few websites. I was using these ingredients every day in combination with the other potentially toxic ingredients, and there are questions about whether enough research has been done on how these toxins effect each other or effect the human body in combination or when used every day for years.
Chemical Ingredients Work Differently in Different Combinations
People who use over-the-counter treatments and products should be every bit as concerned. The short film The Story of Cosmetics points out the beauty industry is allowed to "put nearly any chemical into personal care products, even chemicals linked to cancer and birth defects, with no required safety assessment and inadequate labeling requirements—making cosmetics among the least-regulated consumer products on the market." The average woman uses 12 skin care products ever day and less than 20% of the ingredients have been tested for safety. With over-the-counter skin care products containing countless active ingredients like retinol, hydroquinone, dimethicone, salicylic acid, alpha-hydroxy acids, allantoin and too many other ingredients to list, it is important to treat skin with the right products in the right combinations.
In What Order Should Various Treatments/Ingredients be Applied for Maximum Benefit?
Even before I saw The Story of Cosmetics video, whenever my dermatologist recommended a new product, common sense had me ask how to work it into my existing routine. The resulting guesswork and complex routine consisted of applying one product 1/2 hour before the next, and another 1/2 hour later, and moving one product to the morning if it didn't work as well at night, and so on.
MultiMed Therapy Regimes: The Right Formulations in the Right Order
Rodan + Fields Dermatologists developed MultiMed regimes designed to treat the underlying causes of specific skin problems. The MultiMed regimes are based on using the right medicines and active cosmetics, in the right formulations, in the right order. As practicing dermatologists specializing in the application of medicines and active cosmetics, Rodan + Fields has put together medically sound combinations of active ingredients in regimes that include cleansing, exfoliating, treatment, moisturizer and suncscreen to take care of specific problems like redness, blemishes, wrinkles, brown spots, sensitive skin, sun damage and other skin problems. There is no guesswork involved in what will work with what and which ingredients should not be combined with others. Each product in a regimen is numbered in the order it should be used.
