Six Summer Skincare Tips

Red looks good for 4th of July fireworks but not on your skin

If you are planning a day outside for the 4th of July, or anytime this summer, here are some skincare tips to keep your skin glowing and healthy in the summer sun.

1. Cover Up: Holidays in the sun like the 4th of July are a great time for caps, hats, light-weight shirts with sleeves, long shorts, and swimsuit cover-ups. The more skin you cover, the healthier your skin will be. So put those red, white and blue clothes to good use and cover up!
2. Limit Your Exposure: Know when enough is enough. Don't bake in the sun all day.
3. Seek the Shade: Stay cool in the shade instead of the hot sun. If you can't find any shade, carry your own with a patriotic parasol, umbrella or other shade-producing device. Shade won't just protect your skin, it will keep you from overheating as well.
4. Drink Lots of Water: While tea and cola are refreshing on a hot day, they contain caffeine which works to dehydrate you, as well as sugar and other chemicals, especially found in sodas. Water is what your skin and body need on a hot summer day.
5. Use Sunscreen. Find a good moisturizing broad spectrum sunscreen and apply it several times if you are out for several hours and each time you get wet or sweat heavily. Today you can find sunscreens to suit a variety of skin types.
6. Keep Covered Up: At night continue to cover up, avoid perfume and scented soaps, and use a Chemical free, Deet-free insect repellent to avoid mosquito bites on your healthy skin.

Yoga and skincare: addressing the needs of healthy skin

For those who have not thought about it, yoga and skin care might not seem related, but more and more yoga instructors are getting involved in other aspects of total body wellness including skincare.

Lotus Blooming Yoga owner Kay Brandt is one of those who sees the tie-in between yoga and skin, "Yoga is wonderful for the skin because it supports overall health," she states. "In finding a way to relax and reduce stress through yoga, you can release the tension in the face that creates fine lines and wrinkles." Brandt, whose yoga studio is located in the Bellevue area of Nashville, says a regular practice of yoga helps you be more in tune with your body, so making healthy choices in your diet and self-care routines will be more noticeable.

To address the needs of healthy skin, Brandt has added clinical skincare from Rodan + Fields Dermatologists to her studio's offerings.

Is canned food bad food? New study says no -- Examiner

Is canned food bad food?

The "all-natural" movement spends a lot of time talking and blogging about how bad canned food is for you, but is all that fearful propaganda really true?

In spite of fears about preservatives and BPA in canned goods, some new studies have surprising information to add to the controversial debate.

A new study released by Del Monte Foods answers the question: Do families who eat canned veggies get more nutrients than those who don't?

Why Canned Food May Be Healthier Than You Think

A surprising (and fiber-rich) new study, with an accompanying infographic released by Del Monte Foods.

Question:  Do Nashville families who eat canned veggies get more nutrients than those who don't?
Answer:  According to the 2016 "Canned Vegetable Nutrients Study" -- a dietary analysis of 24,000 people conducted by the Canned Food Alliance, with analysis by Dr. Marjorie Freedman (of San Jose State University) -- the answer is a resounding "yes."  Del Monte's infographic explains this new data.
Consider this:
*  94% of American adults are not eating enough fruits and vegetables
*  Adults who eat canned fruits and vegetables eat 19% more fruit and 17% more veggies than those who don't
*  Adults who eat canned fruits and vegetables consume 7% more dietary fiber and 5% more potassium than those who don't
*  Canned fruits and vegetables include low-sodium options and non-GMO foods like Del Monte Blue Lake Cut Green Beans
These nutritional benefits affect our kids, too:
*  9 in 10 kids don't eat enough vegetables and 6 in 10 kids don't eat enough fruit
*  Kids who eat canned fruits and vegetables eat 14% more fruit and 22% more veggies than those who don't
*  Kids who eat canned fruits and vegetables consumed more protein, fiber, vitamin A, calcium, and potassium (but less fat)
Experts believe that canned food has this surprising effect not only because canned vegetables carry nearly identical nutrients to their fresh-cooked counterparts, but they are also an easier way to get recommended daily servings of fruits and veggies -- which can lower risk of heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers.
Because most Del Monte fruits and vegetables often go from farm to can within one day, before arriving in Nashville grocery stores, they lock in key nutrients – allowing us to enjoy the benefits of their favorite veggies, even when not in season.  For tips on delicious ways to incorporate more nutrients into your diet, visit: Delmonte.com/addveggies
