National Fragrance Day Coming Up March 21

Most of us have had that experience of a fragrance triggering a long-forgotten memory. I remember after my mother Died catching a whiff of someone's Channel Number Nine as they passed by and immediately having several flashbacks of her wearing the same perfume.

Around the turn of the century, I worked for a year in the Macy's Fragrance Department. I was hesitant at first because I had allergies at the time and some were triggered by perfumes, but working in the fragrance department cured me of my perfume allergies.

Of course, today money-making alarmist groups like the Environmental Working Group are working overtime to solicit your funds, scaring you by finding toxins in everything, including your favorite perfumes. The truth is the levels of perfume chemicals are regulated in products and is not likely to cause you harm unless you are allergic, like I was, or have a condition like asthma.
My Golden Pothos and a few favorite fragrances

However, that's not to say you want to spray your favorite perfume while you light your favorite scented candles and spray your favorite air freshener at the same time inside the same small, closed room. You can have too much of good thing, and fragrances should be treated with respect. It's best to use fragrances and scented products of any kind in rooms that can be aired out, or in rooms with live houseplants. In fact, I share my computer space with a Golden Pothos. See Is there a danger from scented products?

So enjoy your favorite fragrances on National Fragrance Day. Just be sure you share the room with your favorite house plant!

Skin, Health & Beauty Japan on Facebook

A brand-new page has launched on Facebook to help Japanese men and women have healthier skin and creamier complexions and to introduce them to the best skincare products in the U.S. for Japanese skin.

Skin, Health & Beauty Japan will feature health tips as well as skincare and beauty tips that will be useful to anyone but will focus on Japanese skin.

Japanese women, like other Asians. have a thinner outer layer of the skin which is more susceptible to scarring and dryness because the weaker lipid barrier causes moisture to evaporate easily. Some of our tips will address the specific concerns of Japanese skin.

States with the Best & Worst Dental Health-- How Does TN Rank?

Tooth abscess

With February being National Children’s Dental Health Month and dental health having an effect on appearance, general well-being and even earnings, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2018's States with the Best & Worst Dental Health.

In order to determine which places have the healthiest teeth and gums in the U.S., WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 25 key metrics. The data set ranges from share of adolescents who visited a dentist in the past year to dental treatment costs to share of adults with low life satisfaction due to oral condition.

Tennessee's Score

So, how does Tennessee compare to the other 50 states in terms of healthy teeth? The great State of TN came in at a disappointing #38 due to poor dental habits and tooth care as well as oral health risk. Another factor contributing to Tennessee's dental woes and under-performing ranking is Tenn. has the fewest dentists per residents with only 16 dentists per 100,000 Tennesseans.

Are Essential Oils Safe?

We hear a lot of hype today about natural products like essential oils as well as related products like herbal supplements and all-natural beauty products, but are these products all they are cracked up to be. More importantly, are essential oils and other so-called all-natural products safe?

It is so important to realize that all-natural products are NOT by definition safe and can be harmful to your health. For instance, poison ivy is all natural. So is rattlesnake venom.

It is equally important to understand that the all-natural industry is a huge, money-making industry with its own big spin machine as well as mom and pop websites and Facebook pages all too happy to regurgitate the latest spin without any scientific fact checking

When asked if products labeled :natural" or "organic" are by default safe,  the FDA states that not all natural products are safe and that all ingredients--both natural and clinical--must meet the same safety requirements.

One of the worst problems produced by the all-natural industry is its hype against medicine and the fact some people delay going to a doctor because they are trying to treat a condition "naturally." My own mother delayed going to her doctor while she rubbed oils on a small lesion on her leg for months. By the time she went to the doctor, the melanoma had spread to her lymph nodes. She died a few years later after many painfully invasive surgeries.

So do your due diligence when looking at essential oils, herbal supplements and other all-natural products. Understand you are looking at a big, money-making industry. The people producing these oils often don't have clinical trials, science or facts behind them, and the people selling them have little to no training and just want to make some extra money.

Severe Winter Weather Preparation for Home Propane Users

As the Southeast prepares for more cold winter temperatures, Blossman Gas shares some important propane safety tips

How to Prepare Your Home for Severe Winter Weather
·         Schedule your tank and appliances for a maintenance check by your propane provider
·         Be sure there is an adequate supply of fuel in the tank. Federal regulations do not allow propane providers to fill your tank more than 80%. Your optimal tank level is between 25% and 80%. If your level is below 20%, please contact your service provider for a fill.
·         Keep the area around your propane tank and any vents, chimneys, flues free from ice and snow.
·         Be sure your propane generator is well-maintained, stored outdoors away from open windows and doors, and there is adequate supply of fuel in the tank; and be sure to use high-quality extension cords designed for outside use to connect your propane generator to your home.
·         NEVER store propane tank indoors.
·         Notify your propane provider immediately if you run out of propane as a qualified technician must check for leaks before turning the gas back on.

Warning: Intimate Rose Herbal Supplement Natural Horomone Balance Estrogen Pills Are Not Estrogen Pills

I was contacted by the company Intimate Rose through a program called Intellifluence and offered a free bottle of estrogen pills to try if I would post a photo of them and share it with the company. I agreed because I have readers of all ages and estrogen loss from surgeries, menopause and other causes is of concern to a number of my readers. Estrogen therapy has a bad name due to tests on an estrogen drug called Premarin, and many women prefer to try alternatives.

I agreed to participate in the Intellifluence promotion to learn more about these Intimate Rose Natural Hormone Balance Estrogen pills. I was curious what kind of natural estrogen they were using. This is how the listing appeared on Amazon:

Menopause Relief Herbal Supplement For Hot Flashes, Mood Swings & Libido - Natural Horomone Balance Estrogen Pills - DIM, Black Cohosh & Vitamin D, E, B Passion Flower & Red Clover - Feminine Therapy

Called "estrogen pills" twice in the listing

The Amazon listing provided by Intimate Rose refers to the pills twice as "estrogen pills," underlined in red in the photo above.

After receiving the package the first thing I noticed is the packaging says these are NOT estrogen pills. I contacted the seller on Amazon  and discovered I was corresponding with Distinguished Excellence. Distinguished Excellence told me on Dec. 9 that I must have read the listing wrong, that they weren't called estrogen pills. I replied pointing out the two places the pills are clearly labeled as estrogen pills and the company said they would change the description and offered me a refund if I would provide the order number which I promptly did.
Note my question about estrogen and others' concern about Black Cohosh

I followed up twice in December asking when I would receive the refund and Distinguished Excellence never replied.

In January I contacted Intellifluence to report the problem. The transaction was so convoluted with the seller being both Intimate Rose (clearly named next to the item description) and Distinguished Excellence being the seller who replied to my questions, that Intellifluence decided it wasn't the same transaction. Not so "Intelli" after all.

Finally I contacted Amazon who immediately took care of my problem.

* Thumbs down for these Estrogen Pills which are not Estrogen Pills and which have questionable ingrdients based upon other questions to the seller.
* Thumbs down for Intimate Rose and Distinguished Excellence, the dubious sellers of the non-estrogen estrogen pills.
* Thumbs down for Intellifluence who did not help me get a refund from a bad seller.
* Two thumbs up for Amazon for their prompt resolution.
Herbal supplements are regulated by the FDA, but not as drugs or as foods.
They fall under a category called dietary supplements.
The rules for dietary supplements are as follows:
Manufacturers don't have to seek FDA approval before selling
dietary supplements
Herbal supplements: What to know before you buy - Mayo Clinichttps://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/...and.../herbal-supplements/art-20046714
This is just another reason why "all-natural" products don't impress me. They are often untested, unregulated, and depend on all-natural hype and not less-than-perfect science to sell their products. These pills should never have been listed as "Estrogen Pills" even though they are called "Herbal Supplements" elsewhere in the description. There also seems to be some question about the safety of some of the ingredients. Do your due diligence before you buy "all-natural." The all-natural industry is a big, money-making machine with a lot of spin doctors just like big Pharma.
