LEADOKO Women's Summer Gypsy Baggy Tunic Not As Described--A Review

Online Clothing Ads Can Be Deceiving

You know the feeling. You see something online that looks perfect. You look at the specifications or sizes and it looks like a perfect match, so you order it. You can't wait to see your new purchase! A few days later it arrives... and it bears little resemblance to what you ordered. The quality is poor. The size is way off. And it may not look like the picture did online. This was all the case when I ordered the LEADOKO Women's Summer Gypsy Baggy Tunic Tops Shirt Long Sleeve Blouse on Walmart.com. What a huge disappointment and waste of money.

Why do companies in Asia think they can say items fit a certain shoulder, bust, waist and sleeve size and then send sub-par garments that are way to small? I don't know, but if you read the reviews, this is a common problem when ordering clothing online.

You can read about my disappointing experience buying a medium-sized summer blouse at:

Sitara Collections Handmade Jewelry Made with Gemstones, Silk, More---A Review

Sitara Collections may not be a household name, but that may be about to change. The collection features handmade gemstone jewelry in attractive, versatile designs.

Celtic Knot Earrings

With St. Patrick's Day fast approaching, I ordered a pair of  Sitara's gold Celtic Knot earrings. These Celtic Flower Knot Earrings will make a great accent to any outfit, but will be especially fetching for St. Paddy's Day. They are also appropriate for everyday wear or going to the Ren fair.

These gorgeous earrings are made from gold-plated, nickel-free brass and are an interesting mashup of Indian and Celtic design. I have issues with nickel and with heavy earrings, but I found these to be lighter than they look and was pleased to discover they truly are nickel free for my sensitive ears.

The only thing I took issue with was the curve of the ear wire which curved outward. I easily reshaped it into a more gentle, straighter curve which I prefer. In the photo, the earring on the left has the outward curve to the wire, while the earring on the right has been straightened.

With a simple yet elegant design, these gold earrings are sure to suit any attire, day or night, and they are sure to be a hit for Saint Patrick's Day.

    CELTIC KNOT EARRINGS DETAILS:

    • Dimensions: 1.9 inches L x 1 inch W
    • Closure: French Ear Wires
    • Handmade
    • Metal: Nickel-free brass base with gold overlay
    • Both pairs of earrings come with plastic earring backs to keep the earrings secure.

    Sanchali Silk Thread Hoops

In addition to the lovely Celtic design, I took advantage of an offer to get a free pair of Sanchali silk earrings. With a dramatic, multi-hued design and oversized shape, these striking earrings are the only finishing touches you will need for any outfit.

    SANCHALI SILK EARRINGS DETAILS:

    • Materials: Silk Thread, Metal
    • Metal: Brass
    • Dimensions: 2.5 inches lng x 1.75 inches wide
    • Closure: French ear wires
    • Handmade

Sitara Collections customer service was great and delivery was super fast. Both pairs of earrings and many other beautiful styles are available at: https://SitaraCollections.com. Part of the proceeds benefit a school in India.

Sitara Collection Review: I give the Sitara Collection 5 stars for the Celtic Knot Earrings for being nickel free, attractive, and light weight. *****

Ice Carrats Freshwater Cultured Black Pearl Bracelet--a Review

For Christmas 2020, we decided to give cultured pearls as gifts. My husband gave his mother a beautiful strand of black pearls several years ago, so we thought it would be nice to follow that up with a matching black freshwater cultured pearl bracelet this year. Since she lives in a different state, we turned to Amazon.

We found what looked like the perfect bracelet from Ice Carrats for $31. Then we found a set of five genuine freshwater cultured pearl bracelets in various shades for much less-- around $11. The set included a black pearl bracelet which would match my own necklace of black pearls.

When the bracelets arrived, I was surprised to find noticeable scratches on 2 or 3 of the pearls on the Ice Carrats bracelet. Since we barely had time to ship in time for Christmas, I didn't suggest we try a return. The cheaper black pearl bracelet was beautiful.

Sometimes a higher-priced item is not worth the money. This was the case with the Ice Carrats bracelet.

Ice Carrats Freshwater Cultured Black Pearl Bracelet Review

I give the Ice Carrats freshwater cultured pearl bracelet 3 out of 5 stars. It was a pretty bracelet if you didn't notice the flaws, but it was expensive for the value.

I give the generic set of 5 freshwater cultured pearl bracelets 5 stars for attractive bracelets with a nice finish at a great price.

    Skechers Shindigs Women's Boots--a Review

Skechers has once again delivered an excellent product. Regular readers of this blog will know I enjoy hiking for recreation and fitness, so when it was time for a new pair of hiking boots, I thought of Skechers. This time instead of ordering from Skechers website directly, these boots came from Amazon. Amazon has a good selection of Skechers Shindigs women's boots at reasonable prices. I was not disappointed.

The chocolate leather Shindigs boots I ordered are lightweight, comfortable and sturdy. Mine go above the ankles for extra support when hiking the trails or walking the dog. The chocolate brown color is great with just about anything.

The Skechers Shindig line comes with classic rubber-traction outer sole design and a comfy air-cooled memory foam insole. The boots come in shoe-boot height as well as above the ankle like mine and are available in both leather and suede.

    Skechers Shindigs Women's Boots Review

It's little wonder that the boots score a 5 out of 5 stars on the Skechers site. That's exactly what I rate them. Five stars for an attractive leather boot that is lightweight, sturdy and comfortable at a decent price.

Skechers Beverlee Delighted with Luxe Foam--Fashion Review

Skechers Beverlee Delighted with Luxe Foam Sandals in Multi

Readers of this blog know I am a fan of Skechers. However, I have finally found a pair that's not perfect.

I avoided sandals with things, because they are said to be a cause of hammer toe. I went with cute, multi-color fabric straps and a low wedge heel, so I could wear them for light walking like errands, shopping or lunch with the girls.

Unfortunately, these shoes were slightly large and my toes slid out the front. Not only did this detract from the look, but it's hard to walk comfortably when your shoes are too big.

You can't get up and move easily to do even light walking if your shoes don't fit.

Fin out how I was able to fix them and make them even more comfortable than before!

Your Feet Will Love Skechers 3 Pack Sport Mesh No Show Liner Socks

For Foot Odor and Comfortable Fit, Try Skechers 3 Pack Sport Mesh No Show Liner Socks

Skechers Relaxed Fit shoes can hardly be beat for comfortable walking, but the memory foam that gives them such great support also leaves them with some odor if socks aren't worn. Since the shoes fit so well, only the thinnest of footie sock liners will work. That's why I invested in Skechers 3 Pack Sport Mesh No Show Liner Socks.

These Skechers footies also saved the day when I purchased some cheap Noracora Shoes where the seams rubbed my feat and the unattached inner soles came out every time I took the shoes off. Normal socks and footies would not fit but these Skechers no show mesh liners were the perfect way to fix the problem. Since they live up to their name and don't show (and they also don't slip or bunch up), they are a fashionable fix to my foot wear woes.

I love just about everything about the Skechers relaxed fit shoes, but I have to say, these Skechers liners made them even more comfortable-- to the point they almost feel slightly loose on my feet. They definitely solved my issues with the cheap Noracora shoes. $10 for three pair is not bad for socks that don't slip, slide or bunch. Give them a try!

Repairing the Inner Soles of Cheap Noracora Shoes

Recently I made the mistake of buying Noracora Shoes. Not only did I receive one pair that was around three sizes too small, but the pair that did fit had inner soles that popped out every time I took the shoes off.

In case you wondered, it is really annoying to have your shoes' inner soles pop out every time you remove your shoes. Luckily, I came up with two good solutions to fix this problem.

The first fix is to simply wear super thin footy socks. The shoes are too tight to wear normal socks, but thin sock liners prevent my feet from sticking to the soles of these poorly made shoes. I ordered some socks from Skechers that work perfectly. With socks, the shoes don't rub my feet as badly, as well.

The second repair is to use double sided take to attach the inner soles to the shoes, as should have been done by the manufacturer. Actually, the manufacturer should have done even better than double sided tape, but be that as it may, the tape repair worked fine for me. I can wear my shoes both with socks and without socks and they work fine now.

Noracora Shoes: Don't Waste Your Time & Money-- a Review

Noracora Shoes Not Worth the Time & Money

A few months ago, I saw an ad for some Noracora shoes, the Women's Green Slide Hollow-Out Round Toe Casual Pu Sneakers Flats, to be exact, and I made the mistake of ordering them. To start the long list of problems with the Noracora casual sneakers, the insoles are not attached to the shoes, so they come out every time I take the shoes off. Every.Time. But that's just the beginning of my list of problems with Noracora shoes.

The shoes are not comfortable, the seams rub my feet painfully, the tongue comes up too high and won't stay centered, and the Noracora website defaulted to the smallest size on another pair of flats when I placed my order. And don't get my started on their website review process and customer service.

Solar Gloves to Protect Your Hands & Arms for Summer

    A collection of solar gloves

Solar Gloves Are an Optional Way to Protect Your Skin in the Summer

Summer is hard on your skin, and that's a fact. Photoaging causes most of the signs of aging to our skin. Dermatologists recommend liberal and regular application of sunscreen during the summer and early fall months to protect your skin from sun damage if you can't stay in the shade.

Protective Clothing Is a Good Substitute for Sunscreen

However, if you can't stay indoors or under a tree and you don't want to keep up with sunscreen, protective clothing is another option to maintaining healthy skin. Hats, visors, long-sleeve shirts and long pants can protect your skin and so can solar gloves.

Solar gloves come in many styles, fabrics and colors and provide various degrees of protection for the arms and hands. If you are wearing a t-shirt, long solar gloves will pull up all the way to the sleeve to protect the entire arm. So whether you are working in your garden or working out with a jog or a long hike, solar gloves are one way to keep your hands and arms out of the sun.

Read my review of solar gloves here:

Solar Gloves for Hands & Arms, a Review: While I can't say these solar gloves are fashionable, I can say they have a certain charm to them. More importantly, they cover your arms and...

Fashion, Beauty, Health and More at Southern Women's Show

The 2019 Southern Women's Show in Nashville, TN
The 2019 Southern Women's Show took place March 7-10 at the Music City Center in Nashville, Tennessee, providing aisle after aisle of fashion, beauty, skincare and health products of particular interest to women. Approximately 350 vendors were on hand to tempt southern women to try something new.
Kathryn Darden with TDOTHottie, Greg Woerdeman

The female-friendly expo featured cooking demos, fashion shows and a smattering of celebrities and semi-celebrities including Savannah Chrisley, Ms. Cheap, the TDOTHottie, Greg Woerdeman, Tyson Beckford, and, yours truly. I had the privilege to walk the runway as part of the DAN Talent Group Models and Talent fashion show.
    Dashsmiles tooth whitening
One of the more interesting booths included the dashsmiles tooth whitening booth where women sat for 15 minutes to 1/2 hour with a tooth whitening apparatus in their mouth. I ran into my friend Alicia Lajoie with her beautiful daughter there, and Alicia reported later that the device worked wonders.

There were a few food vendors on hand to feed hungry ladies, but a little more variety would have been nice. I ended up having a grilled cheese sandwich served with beef and blue cheese.

Various vendors at the Southern Women's Show in Nashville, Tn.

With jewelry, purses, boots and more--the Southern Women's Show lived up to expectations. It is a great day out with the girls and a fun way to celebrate International Women's Day.

Trivia: International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8. It became a socialist and communist holiday after women got the right to vote in Russia in1917 and was adopted by the feminist movement around 1967.

    Brighton Jewelry Brightens My Day

Playing jewelry model at the Brighton Store in Green Hills (Nashville)

Cute accessories always help bring out your outfit and pull it all together. -- Ciara

One of my favorite stores to visit is Brighton Jewelryand since jewelry and fashion fall under the category of "beauty," this is the perfect place to talk about it.

I have enjoyed Brighton charms for several years and have designed a couple of bracelets using them. However, I soon became captivated by the diverse designs and the sparkle and shine and, well, BLING of all the Brighton collection: necklaces, bracelets, earrings, hair clips, handbags, etc..

Swarovski crystals set in silver and gold plate settings topped with their protective coating make Brighten my favorite costume jewelry right now. The the Heart and Soul display is one of my favorites with their symbols of faith, and I would like one of each of the sparkling blue bracelets pictured here.

"Playing dress-up begins at age five and never truly ends." —Kate Spade

At a recent visit to the Brighton Store at the Green Hills Mall, the manager graciously allowed me to try on one of everything -- well, not quite, but I did manage to put on several necklaces and bracelets and pretend like I was a jewelry model.

Brighton also carries a nice selection of leather goods. Eventually I hope to acquire a Brighton bag. Thankfully, my business is booming, and I have a little mad money these days.

Of course, you can find sterling silver pieces without the name brand for comparable prices if you know where to look, but there is an artistry to Brighton that is hard to beat. So when I visit a mall or upscale shopping area, I always look for the Brighton store. I may not buy anything, but admiring the beautiful designs, colors and shiny things does brighten my day.

Fashion and History Collide at Dressing Downton: Changing Fashion for Changing Times

Cheekwood Botanical Gardens is hosting the lavish Dressing Downton: Changing Fashion for Changing Times exhibit, and it will appeal to fashion lovers and history buffs alike, as well as fans of the popular television series.

The beautiful costumes are displayed in the historic rooms of Cheekwood Mansion which has been restored to its glory days in the 1930s. Guides make sure visitors learn about the fabrics and embellishments used in the historically accurate fashions worn on the show. Changing hemlines are noted as well as tapering skirts and dropped or raised waists.

In addition to the garments, there are enlarged photos from "Downton Abbey" hanging on the walls. These photographs are often paired with photos of the Cheek family in similar garments which gives the display a distinctly Nashville flavor and neatly ties the fashions into the history of the mansion.

Dressing Downton: Changing Fashion for Changing Times runs from June 17 through September 10, 2017 at Cheekwood Mansion in the Belle Meade area of Nashville.

You Look Great! 5 Ways to Lighten Up on Physical Appearance

Go on your Facebook or Instagram feed and you’ll be hard pressed not to find selfies of people flexing at the gym or sunbathing in a bikini. Sprinkled in are ads for skin creams, weight management shakes, hair restoration, cosmetic procedures and butt lifting yoga pants. Thanks to smartphones and selfie culture we are all online being bombarded and obsessing over physical appearance, especially our own. Dr. Sanam Hafeez a NYC based licensed clinical psychologist, teaching faculty member at the prestigious Columbia University Teacher’s College and the founder and Clinical Director of Comprehensive Consultation Psychological Services, says it is time to lighten up. Below are some common obsessive thoughts and actions on physical appearance and what to do about them.

    1. “It takes me an hour and 5 outfit changes before I can leave the house.”
“When you find it difficult to commit to an outfit choice and rapidly change outfits only to look in the mirror thinking everything looks terrible, there is certainly heightened anxiety taking place,” explains Dr. Hafeez. She adds, the problem isn’t the clothes. The problem is self-perception and mindset. “The better you feel about yourself from the inside and the more positive things you have in your life to be appreciative of, the less time you will spend on clothing choices. You’ll know exactly what you want to wear and you’ll be more than satisfied with your choice,” offers Hafeez.
The solution? She suggests training your mind to decide and stick to the style decision by setting an alarm for 5 minutes to brainstorm 2 options. Dr. Hafeez also encourages focusing on where you are going and the positive aspects of the anticipated experience to shift the mind off your physical appearance.

    2. “I can’t pass a reflective surface without checking myself in it.”
If you’re checking yourself out thinking, you look fantastic and swiftly continue to walk on that’s normal, fine, and even healthy. However, if you are thinking, you need to lose weight, that you have a double chin, that you look old, that your hair is terrible, then you’re beating yourself up and are focused on unattainable perfection. “Our bodies will change and we will age. This is a fact of life. Exercising for as little as 20 minutes per day, eating healthily, walking, reading and meditation are all things that are beneficial to us. When we make how we feel top priority, we start to look good. We’re more radiant, smiling, and have higher, more positive energy,” explains Dr. Hafeez.

    3. “I never can leave the house without make-up.”
This is a tough one and common for a lot of women. We all want that fresh faced, gorgeous without trying look. Very few women past puberty can achieve it. “There’s a difference between the level of self-consciousness between a woman who takes 10 minutes to put on some moisturizing foundation, mascara and lip gloss and someone who must spend an hour a full face of make-up perfectly applied,” says Dr. Hafeez.
Getting monthly facials, using effective products designed for your skin type, and educating yourself on different make up formulations can help you cut down on the amount of make-up needed. This could shorten the time it takes getting glammed up!

    4. “I constantly compare myself to others on social media, in magazines, in public.”
Dr. Kirk Brandow, founder and director of the Brandow Clinic for Cosmetic Surgery who has appeared on national programs such as Good Morning America and 20/20, commenting on physical appearance says comparison mindset is incredibly common. “Ten years ago people would come to me with pictures of celebrities, and now they’re showing me random people on their social media feeds.  It is unreasonable to compare yourself to a celebrity as they have a team of trainers and stylists that help them achieve and maintain a certain desired look. Today people see their high school friend on social media with the perfect breasts and they want that same look. People are really comparing themselves to everyone now,” he candidly explains.

Dr. Hafeez advises taking breaks from social media and doing body strengthening and range of motion exercises that also weave in breathing and mindfulness such as yoga or tai chi. “When you are aware of your body’s strength and your general well-being, you’re not going to compare yourself to others. When you’re too busy enjoying a happy, healthy, you won’t care if your thighs are less toned than someone else’s.

    5. “I have a list of cosmetic procedures I want to do and am planning to do this year!”
This is when we must be mindful of body dysmorphia. When we have a distorted perception of our appearance it can lead to an addiction to cosmetic procedures. Dr. Brandow adds that it is very important for cosmetic surgeons to screen people to see if they have signs of body dysmorphia. “Ethically when someone comes in with a list of flaws they want to fix it is up to us professionals to advise them appropriately. When someone is addicted to surgeries and tries to “fix” the same body part repeatedly, that’s a red flag.
Dr. Sanam Hafeez suggests keeping an “appreciation journal” and write down 10 things you appreciate about yourself and your life. This will lessen harsh self-criticism and the need to measure up to any physical ideal.

    About the doctors:
