C.J. Brookelyn in Bellevue offers hairstyling, manicures, accessories and more - Bellevue Examiner

After several productive months with Rodan + Fields skin care, I was able to splurge on having my hair done at a real hair salon!

I called several salons in the Bellevue area and picked C.J. Brookelyn based on price and proximity. I was not disappointed.

A trip to C.J. Brookelyn Hair and Nail Salon in Bellevue is a pleasant
experience. Tucked away between Baskin Robbins and the Bellevue Post Office, the salon can be a little hard to find so the owner Lori Denney has festooned her glass door and windows with hanging lights to draw attention to the business.

The shocking TOXIC skin care and cosmetics conspiracy - Examiner

More and more people seem to believe there is a big conspiracy between the FDA, the government, and the cosmetics industry to sell shoppers toxic skin care products. Chances are good that these people have read some of the articles from the Environmental Working Group (EWG), an organization whose stated purpose is " uses the power of information to protect public health and the environment."

Press release, top ten lists, announcements, chain emails and Facebook eCards from the EWG are copied and pasted and passed around the web without fact checking by all-natural websites, organic websites, liberal news sites and chumps on Facebook.

Men in skin care surprising new business trend - Examiner

Four men at a recent skin care meeting in Brentwood, TN
The newest trend in skin care is -- MEN! An increasing number of men are seeing the benefits of the anti-aging skin care industry both as consumers and from a business perspective.

Gone are the days when a jar of face cream was strictly a woman's domain as more males are flexing their purchasing muscle buying men's skin care brands as well as selling skin care products for guys and gals.

Obesity and skin problems: top skincare concerns of the overweight - Examiner

By now everyone should be aware of the many health problems associated with obesity, but did you know being overweight can cause its own set of skin problems?

Being overweight often gives men and women a false sense of well being when it comes to their skin. "My skin has doesn't have any wrinkles!" an overweight person might be tempted to say. It is a fact that many obese people have fewer lines and wrinkles than their healthier counterparts. That is not because their skin is healthier, however, but because adipose tissue or body fat is loose connective tissue.

Shaving your legs need not be brutal!

The Women's Five Blade by 800razors.com arrived with its hot pink handle and several cartridges enclosed in their own plastic covers.

Inside the box was also a 4 x 5 card with tips on how to use the razor and how to get a softer, smoother shave.

Country-gospel artist Glen Campbell to release his last song - Examiner

This article was hard for me to write. I had a huge crush on Glen Campbell in junior high and then later, I slowly lost my own father to this dreadful disease. It breaks my heart for anyone to have to walk down this long road. God bless you, Glen Campbell.

Country Music Hall of Fame member Glen Campbell has recorded his last song which will release on September 30 to digital retailers. “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” was written by Campbell and Julian Raymond for “Glen Campbell… I’ll Be Me,” a new documentary about Campbell’s life and his battle with Alzheimer’s disease. The film had its world premiere at Nashville Film Festival in April 2014.

“I’m Not Gonna Miss You” reveals the things Alzheimer’s steals—what is lost, the cost, and the reality of all that will all be taken from Campbell and those who deal with the relentless disease. The country star recently entered a long-term care facility in Nashville to better provide for his condition.

Country star Glen Campbell and Alzheimer's: profile of True Grit

This was an article originally written for my "Profiles" series on Associated Content/Yahoo in 2011 titles "Country star Glen Campbell and Alzheimer's: profile of a Rhinestone Cowboy." With the announcement of the release of Glen Campbell's last song today, I tweaked it and republished it on Examiner.

It is with great sadness his many fans learned on June 23, 2011, that 76-year-old Glen Campbell has Alzheimer's disease.

When the Coen Brothers' remake of "True Grit" came out in 2010, the role of Texas Ranger LaBoeuf was played by superstar Matt Damon. However, in the original 1968 version, country music star Glen Campbell played LaBoeuf opposite movie star John Wayne after Elvis Presley demanded top billing for the role and lost it.

Glen Campbell has had a diverse career, from singing star, to movie star and even host of his own television show. He has even provided the Elvis-inspired voice of Chanticleer in "Rock-A-Doodle."

How to make essential oils at home using distilled water - Examiner

Essential oils are undoubtedly popular, but did you know you can make your own? As mentioned in Part 1 of this series: "Do essential oils live up to the hype?" DIY essential oils can be made much less expensively at home than the cost of purchasing them.

Making Essential Oils at Home: There are several ways to create the oils at home. Two of the most popular methods are through the use of distilled water and using oils. The advantage of the distilled water method over the oil method is the essential oil produced through heating the distilled water will last about twice as long as the oil method.

Do essential oils live up to the hype? - Examiner

Essential oils are definitely in vogue with the all-natural, organic set. They originally became a trendy lifestyle fad hot on the heels of aromatherapy. These highly concentrated oils usually extracted from aromatic plants like herbs, flowers, spices and citrus came into vogue, disappeared for a while, and are now a hot item again.

One only has to Google "essential oils" to find page after page of dealers of "theraputic grade" and other essential oils: Young Living, Puritan, Bulkapothecary, New Directions, Mountain Rose Herbs, Rocky Mountain Oils, Nature's Kiss, DoTerra, Silky Scents and more line page one. A search for "essential oils dealers" turns up 4,650,000 results!

Essential oils and skin care - Examiner

There is a lot of buzz in "all natural" circles now about essential oils, their supposed healing properties and beauty applications.

What is an Essential oil? An essential oil is a concentrated volatile oil or hydrophobic liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from plants like herbs and flowers. The term "essential" simply comes from the "essence" of the plant.

Although skin is slightly permeable, it is not a digestive organ that readily absorbs oils or nutrients. In fact, the skin is equipped with several barriers to keep foreign matter--even water molecules out--based upon molecule size and solubility. It is debatable whether or not most essential oil ingredients can penetrate past the skin's natural protective barriers. Most foreign substances that do manage to make it past the skin's top layers and past the moisture barrier are disposed of as waste.

Exclusive mystery skin care product from leading dermatologist to be announced this week

A leading skin care company is about to make a major product breakthrough announcement that has the skin care industry buzzing. Rodan + Fields Dermatologists will do their Big Reveal at the national convention in Atlanta this weekend.

Dr. Katie Rodan and her business partner, Dr. Kathy Fields, made history in the 1990s when they developed the first multi-med therapy for acne — Proactiv.

Then the doctors, both now women in the 50s, decided to turn their attention to the problems of aging skin. They created four main regimens: REDEFINE to address wrinkles and lines; REVERSE to address age spots and melasma; SOOTHE to treat sensitive skin and rosacea; and UNBLEMISH to treat adult acne and cystic acne.

The new anti-aging skin care product has already been enthusiastically received by beauty editors whose stories should break in October issues in time to coincide with the coming product announcement.

EnvyDerm Lip Volumizing and Conditioning Plumper overview and review - Examiner

If you are looking for a temporary lip plumper, EnvyDerm cosmetics located in Southern California is the creator of the EnvyDerm Lip Volumizing and Conditioning Plumper, a vegan friendly, dermatologist safety tested long wear gloss. The plumper comes in ten colors for $23 per gloss and creates a cool, tingling sensation. This is said to plump lips up to 37% fuller.

I didn't notice a big difference in size, but the plumper did make me feel a "buzz" on my lips. It was not unpleasant and may have plumped them a little. I definitely achieved better results and certainly much more permanent results with the Lip Serum and Micro-Needle Roller.

All in all, I liked the EnvyDerm Lip Volumizing and Conditioning Plumper as a lip gloss. Read my review at:

Grow a Small Garden for Healthier Eating

Whole foods are better for you than processed -- by now everyone has figured that out -- and raw fruits and vegetables are necessary for good health. However, growing your own food is even better for your health for a variety of reasons.

When you grow a small garden, including patio gardens and deck gardens, you can be assured of whether or not pesticides were used on your food. And instead of picking food before it is ripe and letting it ripen in transit... or not ripen completely, you can res assured your fruits and vegetables ripen naturally on the vine where they receive the most nutrients and become the most flavorful.

So start a small garden on your patio, deck or small plot of land and try growing a few favorite foods. Some that do well in my Nashville yard are parsley, tomatoes, oregano, rosemary, and garlic. In fact everything in the photo above that is going into my home-made spaghetti sauce was grown on or around my patio! And it tastes much better than Prego or Ragu!
