New Poll Reveals Which Hazards Increase During Holidays

New Poll Reveals Which Hazards Increase During Holidays
Allstate finds homeowners not quite prepared for holiday home hazards

Festive, joyful and togetherness are just a few words that come to mind when thinking about the holidays. However, a new Allstate poll shows “hazardous” should be at the top of the list, too.
Allstate’s fourth annual national holiday home hazards survey The 2016 Allstate Holiday Home Hazards survey was conducted by FTI Consulting from October 6-16, 2016. The survey was conducted among N=1,015 adults (home/condo owners and renters) and an oversample of N=224 first-time home or condo owners who purchased their very first home in the past year.
reveals homeowners as well as renters aren’t prepared as they could when it comes to protecting their homes during the holidays. Some of the most common pitfalls are leaving temptations for “porch pirates” and sharing too much on social media. (See details below). And in Southern States* specifically, Allstate found the following hazards have the largest spikes during the holiday seasonPercentage change based on holiday season versus non-holiday season homeowners, condo and renters claim frequency for *Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana and Mississippi during the three-year period of Jan. 15, 2013-Jan. 15, 2016, with the holiday season from Nov. 15-Jan. 15. Only hazards that occurred at least 10 times during the three-year period, with positive and statistically significant percentage changes, were included.   :
  1. Bursting Pipes from Freezing
  2. Fire originating from a fireplace
  3. Smoke damage from Kitchen
  4. Ice Dams
  5. Glass breakage
“With so much focus on shopping, gift giving and making holiday meals and other preparations, people may overlook simple, but important safety steps to protect their homes,” said Steve Blume, Allstate agency owner. A few precautionary measures can better protect the hosts and their guests:

  • Test smoke alarms and/or carbon monoxide detectors
  • Inspect home interiors and exteriors (including windows, roofs, gutters and chimneys) for leaks and damage.
  • Keep your home heated above 65 degrees to prevent pipes from freezing
  • Limit the number of lights per outlet or power strip to prevent a live Christmas tree fire.
  • Place a live tree away from heat sources to minimize fire risk
Not taking proper precautions can lead to costly damage. Allstate claims data shows the median cost of bust pipes from freezing was $5,500, fire-related fires was $10,149 and electrical fires was $22,683
Holiday trips also may become holiday home hazards as travelers often leave behind opportunities for theft.
  • Consider stopping your mail and/or newspaper delivery before taking a holiday trip.
  • Ensure all doors and windows are locked before leaving on a holiday trip (Only about 77% of homeowners and renters plan to do this).
  • Lock all vehicles left in their driveway or garage.
Think no one will notice you’re not home? Think again. Allstate found the following happens more frequently during the holidays:
  • Missing Property from garage increases 37% during the holidays (median cost $1,697)
  • Burglary increases 6% (median cost $2,911)
  • Theft from unlocked vehicles increases 2% (median cost $1,177)
SOCIAL MEDIA SHARING – Oversharing can send a message to criminals that a home may be unoccupied. Those who post on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and other popular sites should think twice before:
  • Sharing pictures of yourself at holiday travel destinations
  • Sharing details of travel itinerary, such as being at the airport or on their way home
  • Showing off presents
Taking a few simple steps can be the difference between the holidays being happy and memorable for all the right reasons.

Thanksgiving & Holiday Eating Tips

With Thanksgiving just around the corner. Focus on the Family has come up with some tips to help you make Thanksgiving dinner more healthy and enjoyable.

Here are just a few healthy eating tips compliments of Focus on the Family. These would apply to the holidays as well as Thanksgiving:
  • Provide nutritious appetizers and dishes. Allow guests and family to nibble on vegetables before dinner. Also, you might be surprised that many side dishes are quite delicious even without gobs of canned cream soups and loads of carbs and fat.
  • Don't wait until dinner to eat. A healthy breakfast and snacks before the big meal can help keep you from overindulging.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water before and during the feast. It will help you feel full and replaces high calorie drinks.
  • Have some sweets—in moderation. Healthy eating doesn't mean you'll never again eat anything you like. But it does involve not eating half a pie. Sample the sweets, just don't gorge on them.
Special thanks to the good folks at Focus on the Family for these timely Thanksgiving tips.    For more Thanksgiving reading, check out the Focus on the Family article Seven Days of Gratitude

National Dog Appreciation Day: Dogs and health - Nashville Skin Care Examiner

 Happy National Dog Appreciation Day!

Wednesday, Aug. 26 is National Dog Appreciation Day, and Tennessee has been ranked the #4 most "Dog Happy" U.S. state, according to the Milo's Kitchen 'Dog Happy' Survey.

Other studies indicate that being a "Dog Happy" state should make Tennessee a healthier state, and yet Nashville was recently ranked #5 'Unhealthiest City' in America.

I have been a dog lover ever since I was rescued by a papillon 20 years ago. I didn't think I wanted or needed a dog, but she quickly showed me the error of my ways, so I can attest to the many health benefits of being owned by a dog.

After my first papillon, Miss Katy,  died at 17, I was devastated by her loss and quickly got another little dog for my emotional well being and even physical wellness.

Sensitive skin? Go green for St. Patrick's Day with Soothe

With St. Patrick's Day just around the corner, our thoughts turn to Ireland, the Irish and the green of the Emerald Isle. The Irish are often known for their red hair and fair skin. Even the "Black Irish" with their dark hair usually have fair, sensitive skin.

Dr. Shapiro: New Year, New You - Meeting Your Weight Loss Resolution

Diet tips from Dr. Howard Shapiro, NYC-based weight loss specialist and NY Times bestselling author of Dr. Shapiro's Picture Perfect Weight Loss 30 Day Plan and the Picture Perfect Weight Loss series. Dr. Shapiro's past clients include then-Archbishop Timothy Dolan, Barbara Walters and Mariah Carey.

New Year, New You - Finally Meeting Your Weight Loss Resolution

Due to the very different lifestyles people lead, every individual faces separate challenges when it comes to being healthy and losing weight. This new year, choose the meal substitutions that best fit your lifestyle to ensure the best dieting results. Although I have not read his book, the press releases claim that using Dr. Shapiro's side by side comparisons, you will learn to stick to new, healthy habits and finally overcome your weight loss resolutions in 2013.

Here are some weight loss tips from Dr. Shapiro:
  • Tied to a Desk. Most people who spend a lot of time in the office have fairly inactive lifestyles. Often times, food choices are limited and snacks are all too available-no farther than the desk drawer or office fridge. This new year, stay energized all day long:
    • Substitute your breakfast bagel with an English muffin with jam
    • Replace a turkey sandwich during lunchtime with a filling cup of soup and a baked potato
    • Instead of the usual afternoon pick-me-up of cookies, reach for a couple of pretzel rods and a lollipop.
    • In doing so, you will cut out a whopping 610 calories and feel energized by the time the 5 o'clock whistle blows.
  • Home with the Family. Stay-at-home moms (and dads) often have big snacking problems. When the kids leave food on their plates, parents hate to see it go to waste, so they take a little bite but it all adds up. To stick to your resolution and lose weight:
    • Substitute some junk food such as coffee cake and cheese crackers with a banana and a few slices of pineapple instead.
    • For lunch, have a salad with light ranch dressing and a piece of chocolate cake instead of a salad with oil and vinegar and a corn muffin.
    • You will go from consuming 1380 calories to only 770 calories, including those extra bites of the kids' mac and cheese.
  • Wined and Dined Business Traveler. To a person who travels a lot on business, eating is often an integral part of work; from new business lunches to office dinner parties, most important meetings and conferences take place at mealtimes. For fear of not having time to eat while traveling, business travelers often over compensate and eat too much.
    • For breakfast, grab a banana, half a melon, smoked salmon and a pumpernickel roll instead of a bran muffin, scrambled eggs and bacon strips.
    • During lunch time, opt for a large tossed salad with shrimp instead of a caesar salad with shrimp.
    • At dinner time, have pasta primavera and large Manhattan clam chowder instead of penne a la vodka and a roll with butter.
    • More than 1500 calories will be cut from your diet, leaving you feeling healthier and fuller longer.
With Dr. Shapiro's healthy meal substitutions for the new you in new year, you can have your cake and waistline, too!
