Pope Francis and President Trump Defend Charlie Gard's Human Dignity in Controversial Case

How do we deal with health and medical conditions that could cause serious disabilities? Are disabled, retarded, geriatric, senile or otherwise impaired patients not to be extended the same rights as other patients? Do parents not have the right to seek available healthcare for their children? This controversial case examines  how we look at disabilities today.

In separate statements of support, Pope Francis and President Donald Trump have vigorously defended little Charlie Gard's human dignity, and the right of his parents -- Chris and Connie -- to do everything in their power to save the life of their disabled son. Further, President Trump has extended a welcome to Charlie Gard in a U.S. hospital. The Terri Schiavo Life & Hope Network applauds both leaders for their heroic witness and protection of our most vulnerable and disabled brothers and sisters

Country-gospel artist Glen Campbell to release his last song - Examiner

This article was hard for me to write. I had a huge crush on Glen Campbell in junior high and then later, I slowly lost my own father to this dreadful disease. It breaks my heart for anyone to have to walk down this long road. God bless you, Glen Campbell.

Country Music Hall of Fame member Glen Campbell has recorded his last song which will release on September 30 to digital retailers. “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” was written by Campbell and Julian Raymond for “Glen Campbell… I’ll Be Me,” a new documentary about Campbell’s life and his battle with Alzheimer’s disease. The film had its world premiere at Nashville Film Festival in April 2014.

“I’m Not Gonna Miss You” reveals the things Alzheimer’s steals—what is lost, the cost, and the reality of all that will all be taken from Campbell and those who deal with the relentless disease. The country star recently entered a long-term care facility in Nashville to better provide for his condition.

Country star Glen Campbell and Alzheimer's: profile of True Grit

This was an article originally written for my "Profiles" series on Associated Content/Yahoo in 2011 titles "Country star Glen Campbell and Alzheimer's: profile of a Rhinestone Cowboy." With the announcement of the release of Glen Campbell's last song today, I tweaked it and republished it on Examiner.

It is with great sadness his many fans learned on June 23, 2011, that 76-year-old Glen Campbell has Alzheimer's disease.

When the Coen Brothers' remake of "True Grit" came out in 2010, the role of Texas Ranger LaBoeuf was played by superstar Matt Damon. However, in the original 1968 version, country music star Glen Campbell played LaBoeuf opposite movie star John Wayne after Elvis Presley demanded top billing for the role and lost it.

Glen Campbell has had a diverse career, from singing star, to movie star and even host of his own television show. He has even provided the Elvis-inspired voice of Chanticleer in "Rock-A-Doodle."

For a sweet, healthy life, avoid sugar - Skin, Health & Beauty Examiner

For a sweet, healthy life, avoid sugar

The holidays are here, and that means fruitcake, cookies for Santa, egg nog, candy canes, and lots and lots of sweets. Unfortunately, sugar is a hidden killer.
We all know some foods are bad for us because of fat, cholesterol, calories and toxins, but did you know sugar is at the top of the list of bad foods?

November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month

November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. Since I lost my own father to this cruel disease, I am intimately familiar with how it slowly steals your loved ones from you.

President Reagan is one of the most famous public figures to have suffered from the disease. After leaving office in 1989, he publicly announced that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 1994. In 2011, country-gospel legend Glen Campbell announced he is fighting Alzheimer’s disease.

What is Alzheimer’s?
The Alzheimer’s Association defines Alzheimer’s as “a brain disease that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior.” Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia. According to Wikipedia, Alzheimer’s is predicted to affect 1 in 85 people globally by 2050. Since many of the normal signs of aging can be confused with Alzheimer’s, it is important to know the signs of Alzheimer’s disease.

Symptoms of Alzheimer’s
The symptoms of Alzheimer’s tend to develop slowly, with symptoms increasing over time. Besides becoming forgetful, which is usually not a sign of Alzheimer’s, an individual with the disease forgets things and misplaces items and cannot retrace steps or thoughts to retrieve the info. While many older people without Alzheimer’s strugle to remember a word, Alzheimer’s causes people to forget the meaning of common words. As the disease progresses, Alzheimer’s patients loose the ability to converse, and eventually they may forget how to speak at all.
The personality and moods of an Alzheimer’s patient change, usually for the worse. They may no longer remember loved ones. If a patient survives these stages, he may eventually forget how to eat, smile, and otherwise interact with his or her environment on any level.

Alzheimer’s Research
Most of what we know about Alzheimer’s has been discovered in the past 15 years as researchers have discovered links to genetics, brain injuries and brain structure. Drugs have been developed to slow the disease. Research is ongoing into treatment and a possible cure for Alzheimer’s disease.

Nashville Alzheimer Resources
Nashville has several resources to help residents with Alzheimer’s. When my own father reached the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s, we turned to McKendree Village in Hermitage, TN, which has 150 beds of skilled nursing care including Alzheimer’s care.
In Nashville the Mid South Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association serves Tennessee and Alabama.
