Take to the Stairs and Fight for Air

Registration is open for the 2017 Fight for Air Climb in Nashville If the stairs don't take your breath away, the view from the top of the Fifth Third Center will. The American Lung Association in Tennessee is holding its annual Fight For Air Climb in Nashville on Saturday, February 18, 2017, and they're looking for hundreds of participants to help them in their fight for clean air for everyone!  On Event Day, climbers, walkers, runners, firefighters, first responders and supporters of the American Lung Association will climb Fifth Third Center in downtown Nashville. The participants will challenge themselves to climb 29 flights of stairs, 644 steps, while raising money to help support the fight against lung diseases.  The registration fee for the Fight for Air Climb is $25 through December 31, 2016; and $35 after January 1st. For $45, thrill seekers can take part in the new Power Hour Challenge, in which 20 advanced climbers will racer up and down the stairs as many times as possible in one hour. In addition, all participants need to raise a minimum of $100 to participate and can quality for a variety of incentive prizes based on the amount of money they raise.  Lung diseases such as asthma and COPD cannot yet be cured, but they can be managed. Making sure people know what's needed to take control of these lung diseases is one of the American Lung Association's top priorities. Thirty five million Americans are living with chronic lung diseases such as asthma, lung cancer and COPD; lung cancer is America's #1 cancer killer.  You can climb as an individual or form a team with family and friends or one's company. Thanksgiving & Holiday Eating Tips

With Thanksgiving just around the corner. Focus on the Family has come up with some tips to help you make Thanksgiving dinner more healthy and enjoyable.

Here are just a few healthy eating tips compliments of Focus on the Family. These would apply to the holidays as well as Thanksgiving:

• Provide nutritious appetizers and dishes. Allow guests and family to nibble on vegetables before dinner. Also, you might be surprised that many side dishes are quite delicious even without gobs of canned cream soups and loads of carbs and fat.
• Don't wait until dinner to eat. A healthy breakfast and snacks before the big meal can help keep you from overindulging.
• Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water before and during the feast. It will help you feel full and replaces high calorie drinks.
• Have some sweets—in moderation. Healthy eating doesn't mean you'll never again eat anything you like. But it does involve not eating half a pie. Sample the sweets, just don't gorge on them.

Congress Urged to Combat Zika Virus

U.S. Health Crisis Looming: Malteser International Americas Urges Congress to Reconvene to Combat Zika Virus

In a second letter sent to Congressional leaders and the Florida delegation today, Miami-based humanitarian organization Malteser International Americas has called on the U.S. Congress to cut short its summer recess to pass Zika virus prevention and treatment funding without further delay.

  

"We teach our children to eat their vegetables before they can have dessert. We tell them to finish their homework before meeting up with friends or playing on their smartphones. The protocol for Congress should be no different," said Ravi Tripptrap, Executive Director of Malteser International Americas. "The golf course isn't going anywhere, but the Zika virus is on the move in the United States, first in Florida and now in Illinois. Congress must return to work now."

  

Malteser International Americas has been on the front lines of the Zika outbreak in northern Colombia since it first became a threat to pregnant women and children, providing Zika Prevention Kits and educating those in the poorest, most forgotten regions where new cases of the mosquito-born disease are diagnosed on a daily basis.

  

Since the World Health Organization declared the Zika outbreak a global health emergency in February, Congress has taken a backseat, "Not In My Back Yard" approach. With non-travel related cases confirmed in Miami earlier this week and the announcement on Thursday of 46 cases confirmed in Illinois, 8 of whom are pregnant women, it is imperative that Congress act NOW. Zika is being carried into their backyard by mosquitoes, and their most important responsibility is to protect the health and safety of United States citizens.

In the meantime, people living in potentially affected areas shout consider investing in good mosquito repellent.
