A Dermatologist Explains Mysterious Skin Disease Greyscale on 'Game of Thrones'

By Source (WP:NFCC#4), Fair use, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?curid=35018821

For a short time "Game of Thrones" was one of my guilty pleasures when actor Sean Bean of "Lord of the Rings" fame played the Season One lead role of Ned Stark. The show quickly became too dark and sexually explicit for my tastes, but I have continued to read reviews, articles and spoilers to keep up with the plot.

Recently I cane across an intriguing article about the deadly and mysterious skin condition greyscale, a disorder that is the terror of the citizens of Westeros and other locales. Spread by skin-to-skin contact with another person or an infected object, greyscale is a highly-infectious plague. The skin disease causes a grey, rock-like overgrowth of tissue that gets progressively worse and more deforming over time if not treated immediately by magic and alchemy. It is usually dealt with by quarantine or exile.

Jules Lipoff, MD, assistant professor of clinical dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania, takes a look at the skin disease from "Game of Thrones" and offers his own diagnosis and treatment for greyscale.
