On Tuesday night, Jan. 28, I was invited to a small pub in Bellevue,
(PUB)licity Restaurant & Bar, to hear live jazz music (Newell &
Sorrells). I was not expecting much in the way of food from a place that
specializes in bourbon and beer, but felt like I should order
something, so I asked for a menu. Who knew I would fall in love with a $4 salad?

Senate Republicans revealed their vision for health care yesterday in a proposal drafted by Senators Orrin Hatch (Utah), Tom Coburn (Okla.) and Richard Burr (N.C.) as a legislative blueprint for conservative reform. Unsurprisingly, as its first order of business, the Patient Choice, Affordability, Responsibility and Empowerment Act (P-CARE) repeals President Barack Obama's health care law in its entirety.

It then spends eight pages largely putting that law back together.

My First Hike of 2014

Today I led my first hike of 2014. Not only that, but  it was my first hike since I pulled something in my hip in mid-November.

Of course, I have built up by walking in my neighborhood and local park, but this was my first day back in the Warner parks. I set an easy goal of a mile and a half on the paved roads in an area I knew would be relatively flat -- no sense re-injuring my hip on my first hike! I posted the hike on a couple of boards and had 14 other people show up, so it was a fun outing.

The weather, which has been brutally cold, was picture perfect. I prefer to hike when it is cool, and I felt rejuvenated being outdoors exercising and enjoying nature.

I also had purchased a green aluminum hiking pole (pictured above) which I just love and plan to use on all my future hikes in case my hip or anything else ever starts hurting on a hike again. Better safe than sorry!

I do recommend the hiking/walking sticks to anyone who has had an injury or who is approaching their senior years when things start to pop and pull. The one I got was lightweight, adjustable and under $20. You can find the SE Collapsible Walking Stick for as low as $16 on Amazon.

Hopefully I will build back up to longer trail hikes again, but slower, shorter, flatter hikes have a lot to offer, too. The important thing is to keep moving to stay healthy!

Do You Believe the "Fat by Fifty" Lie?

It is a popular myth that most women are fat and frumpy by age 50 or 55. 

There is a cartoon of a fat and frumpy Barbie caricature with the legend "Barbie Turns 50" making the rounds again. The cartoon would be funnier if obesity were not a national health crisis and if so many women were not not fooling themselves into thinking this is how all women look at 50 or 55.

If you choose to believe the lie, you might as well buy your muumuus now while the weather is cold. Maybe you will find a good off-season sale! 

Your doctor can tell you the average weight for your age and height as well as the healthy weight for your height and age. Don't use your obese friends as the standard. Find out what the real figures are. 

While Americans are choosing to let themselves become fatter every year, obesity is still not the average weight, nor should we enable it to become the norm. Cute terms like "pleasingly plump," "full-figured," "big and beautiful," and "curvy" do not represent the toxic health hazards of being fat. Unhealthy is NOT beautiful. Anorexia is not beautiful and neither is obesity.

Thankfully, most women are NOT fat and frumpy at fifty and my readers don't have to be, either. This applies to you men, too.

Eat better. Eat less. Exercise more. Live healthy. Be beautiful. Don't believe the lie.

When it comes to the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare, some states appear to be in much worse shape than others. For certain states, total enrollment has been nothing short of abysmal -- particularly when compared with the potential market size of uninsured individuals.

As The Motley Fool's Brian Orelli noted recently, experts say that ideally around 40% of Obamacare enrollees should belong to a younger demographic. That figure counts on younger Americans to generally be healthier. Insurance companies need a solid pool of healthy individuals to enroll in order to offset less healthy enrollees.

How many states have achieved that 40% mark so far? Zip. Nada.

Tips for Avoiding Skin Cancer without Slathering on Sunscreen

Some  people may be surprised to learn that skin cancer is the  most common form of cancer, many. The Skin Cancer Foundation reports that this most common form of cancer is found on roughly two million people each year. What’s more, over the last three decades there have been more people diagnosed with skin cancer than all other forms of cancer put together. Many experts recommend people wear sunscreen when outdoors, but in all actuality not everyone likes wearing it.

“There are several reasons why many people skip the sunscreen,” explains Elise Champe, owner of Eclipse Sun Products. “Many avoid it because they don’t want to put the chemicals on their body. Others skip it because they don’t like the feeling or it seems to make them sweat more.”

Of course, there are some great sunscreens that use minerals instead of chemicals, and with the advent of carotenoids from seaweed, some advanced sunscreens labeled SPF 50+ or 30 only have the chemical makeup of an SPF 25 or 15. In fact, today many moisturizers and BB Creams contain sunscreen that goes on with a non-greasy lotion feel.

However, those who don’t like to lather up with the sunscreen still need protection in order to help avoid adding to the skin cancer statistics. Here are some tips for avoiding skin cancer without slathering on sunscreen:

·      Cover up. The more skin that can be covered with a sun protective product the better. In addition to wearing a wide-brimmed hat, look for clothing that provides UPF protection. Even those wearing short-sleeved shirts can get protection by using protective sun sleeves and sun gloves.
·      Seek shade. If you can’t find shady areas to be in when outdoors, take them with you. Shady areas can quickly be created by putting up tents or carrying an umbrella. However, remember sunlight reflects off of sand, concrete, cars, windows, water, snow, metal and many other reflective surfaces, so it is a good idea to wear a light sunscreen or protective clothing even in the shade.
·      Clock watch. Avoid going outdoors in the middle of the day, if possible. Getting outside in the morning or evening will help to avoid some of the sun exposure.
·      Eat your veggies. Most fruits and vegetables are loaded with antioxidants. Antioxidants, according to the National Cancer Institute, are chemicals that block the activity of free radicals. Free radicals can cause damage to cells and lead to cancer.
 Most skin care experts would agree the best choice is ALL OF THE ABOVE: Wear protective clothing AND sunscreen and stay out of the sun's hottest rays.
“The good news is there are things people can do to protect themselves if they don’t want to wear sunscreen,” added Champe. “If you make an effort with these options you can help to reduce the exposure to harmful rays and lower your risks.”
