Solar Gloves to Protect Your Hands & Arms for Summer

A collection of solar gloves

Solar Gloves Are an Optional Way to Protect Your Skin in the Summer

Summer is hard on your skin, and that's a fact. Photoaging causes most of the signs of aging to our skin. Dermatologists recommend liberal and regular application of sunscreen during the summer and early fall months to protect your skin from sun damage if you can't stay in the shade.

Protective Clothing Is a Good Substitute for Sunscreen

However, if you can't stay indoors or under a tree and you don't want to keep up with sunscreen, protective clothing is another option to maintaining healthy skin. Hats, visors, long-sleeve shirts and long pants can protect your skin and so can solar gloves.

Solar gloves come in many styles, fabrics and colors and provide various degrees of protection for the arms and hands. If you are wearing a t-shirt, long solar gloves will pull up all the way to the sleeve to protect the entire arm. So whether you are working in your garden or working out with a jog or a long hike, solar gloves are one way to keep your hands and arms out of the sun.

Read my review of solar gloves here:

Solar Gloves for Hands & Arms, a Review: While I can't say these solar gloves are fashionable, I can say they have a certain charm to them. More importantly, they cover your arms and...

Six Summer Skincare Tips

Red looks good for 4th of July fireworks but not on your skin

If you are planning a day outside for the 4th of July, or anytime this summer, here are some skincare tips to keep your skin glowing and healthy in the summer sun.

1. Cover Up: Holidays in the sun like the 4th of July are a great time for caps, hats, light-weight shirts with sleeves, long shorts, and swimsuit cover-ups. The more skin you cover, the healthier your skin will be. So put those red, white and blue clothes to good use and cover up!
2. Limit Your Exposure: Know when enough is enough. Don't bake in the sun all day.
3. Seek the Shade: Stay cool in the shade instead of the hot sun. If you can't find any shade, carry your own with a patriotic parasol, umbrella or other shade-producing device. Shade won't just protect your skin, it will keep you from overheating as well.
4. Drink Lots of Water: While tea and cola are refreshing on a hot day, they contain caffeine which works to dehydrate you, as well as sugar and other chemicals, especially found in sodas. Water is what your skin and body need on a hot summer day.
5. Use Sunscreen. Find a good moisturizing broad spectrum sunscreen and apply it several times if you are out for several hours and each time you get wet or sweat heavily. Today you can find sunscreens to suit a variety of skin types.
6. Keep Covered Up: At night continue to cover up, avoid perfume and scented soaps, and use a Chemical free, Deet-free insect repellent to avoid mosquito bites on your healthy skin.

Did You Know? Acne and Sunscreen

Limit sun exposure when using an acne product and don’t skip the sunscreen if you have acne. People often believe that sun helps to clear up their acne because a tan masks the redness of a breakout and in fact, sometimes pimples do dry up a bit faster. However, over time, sun exposure causes more breakouts rather than clearing them up.

With every tan, cell turnover increases, building up more dead cells, blocking pores, causing more
breakouts. On top of that, UV rays will intensify post-acne dark marks. Skipping the sunscreen is not an effective way to treat acne and will often make it worse.

UV exposure worsens both acne and redness and benzoyl peroxide may increase sensitivity. That's why acne sufferers should always use an oil control broad-spectrum SPF sunscreen.

Did You Know? Sun Damage, Melasma & Sunscreen

It doesn't matter if you are a hiker or gardener or if you are only in the sun going to and from your car and driving to work -- the aging rays in the UVA spectrum are present from sun-up to sun-down, 365 days a year, summer and winter, rain or shine. The sun's rays penetrate clouds, window glass and thin clothing. Twenty minutes of daily unprotected sun exposure over the course of a  year is equal to spending 8 hours a day for 2 weeks sunbathing without protection. That's why it is important to always wear UVA/UVB sunscreen.

Heat (even cooking over a hot stove), hormones, and sunlight can cause brown spots on your skin. Keep cool and reapply sunscreen every 2 hours when exposed to the sun. Birth control pills or hormone replacement can make you sun-sensitive, so never be stingy with the sunscreen. Remember, no sunscreen lasts all day.

If you are treating your skin for age spots and melasma, a single day of unprotected sun exposure can virtually undo months of treatment. Don't forget the sunscreen, summer or winter!

Tips for Avoiding Skin Cancer without Slathering on Sunscreen

Some  people may be surprised to learn that skin cancer is the  most common form of cancer, many. The Skin Cancer Foundation reports that this most common form of cancer is found on roughly two million people each year. What’s more, over the last three decades there have been more people diagnosed with skin cancer than all other forms of cancer put together. Many experts recommend people wear sunscreen when outdoors, but in all actuality not everyone likes wearing it.

“There are several reasons why many people skip the sunscreen,” explains Elise Champe, owner of Eclipse Sun Products. “Many avoid it because they don’t want to put the chemicals on their body. Others skip it because they don’t like the feeling or it seems to make them sweat more.”

Of course, there are some great sunscreens that use minerals instead of chemicals, and with the advent of carotenoids from seaweed, some advanced sunscreens labeled SPF 50+ or 30 only have the chemical makeup of an SPF 25 or 15. In fact, today many moisturizers and BB Creams contain sunscreen that goes on with a non-greasy lotion feel.

However, those who don’t like to lather up with the sunscreen still need protection in order to help avoid adding to the skin cancer statistics. Here are some tips for avoiding skin cancer without slathering on sunscreen:

·      Cover up. The more skin that can be covered with a sun protective product the better. In addition to wearing a wide-brimmed hat, look for clothing that provides UPF protection. Even those wearing short-sleeved shirts can get protection by using protective sun sleeves and sun gloves.
·      Seek shade. If you can’t find shady areas to be in when outdoors, take them with you. Shady areas can quickly be created by putting up tents or carrying an umbrella. However, remember sunlight reflects off of sand, concrete, cars, windows, water, snow, metal and many other reflective surfaces, so it is a good idea to wear a light sunscreen or protective clothing even in the shade.
·      Clock watch. Avoid going outdoors in the middle of the day, if possible. Getting outside in the morning or evening will help to avoid some of the sun exposure.
·      Eat your veggies. Most fruits and vegetables are loaded with antioxidants. Antioxidants, according to the National Cancer Institute, are chemicals that block the activity of free radicals. Free radicals can cause damage to cells and lead to cancer.
Most skin care experts would agree the best choice is ALL OF THE ABOVE: Wear protective clothing AND sunscreen and stay out of the sun's hottest rays.
“The good news is there are things people can do to protect themselves if they don’t want to wear sunscreen,” added Champe. “If you make an effort with these options you can help to reduce the exposure to harmful rays and lower your risks.”

Eclipse Sun Products, which include sun sleeves and sun gloves, are being used by many people who spend a lot of time outdoors, including golfers, drivers, hikers, and bikers. They are UPF 50+, fashionable, finger-free, and made from patented sun guard fabric. They are made of Spandex to provide a non-slip fit. They also provide moisture wicking and cooling. The Paradox of Sunscreen & Sun Damage

Sun Damage: When it comes to sun protection, in many ways we are much smarter than we were even 30 years ago … most of us understand the importance of sun protection. But in spite of this, skin continues to age and skin cancer rates have continued to rise. If sunscreen were effectively protecting us, this would not be the case...

Sunburn is a form of radiation burn from an overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. It is not only painful, but sunburn causes premature aging and can lead to skin cancer. To keep your skin safe and healthy, use a broad-spectrum skin care product appropriate for your specific skin type.

Sunscreens for the Face

Wrinkles/Dryness: For those concerned with dryness, wrinkles, and fine lines, the ultimate sunscreen product is the Redefine Triple Defense Treatment. With photostable broad spectrum SPF 30 protection and a clinically proven concentration of powerful peptides to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles and visibly firm the skin.
Brown spots: For the strongest sunburn protection Reverse Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ Sunscreen features stabilized avobenzone and anti-oxidant/anti-inflammatory colorless carotenoids to provide prolonged broad spectrum protection.
Sensitive skin: The Soothe Mineral Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30 is made without chemical sunscreens, fragrance, dyes or alcohol that can irritate sensitive skin. The lightweight formula protects the skin and the skin’s delicate moisture barrier.
Acne: For those who suffer with acne, the wrong sunscreen can cause breakouts and blemishes, the Unblemish Oil Control Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 20 controls oiliness as it protects against UV rays that intensify post-acne marks and uneven skin tone.

Body Sunscreen

Formulated to use on the entire body, Essentials Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Body Sunscreen is a light broad spectrum sunscreen that isn't sticky or greasy. It protects the skin’s moisture barrier and contains antioxidant vitamins C and E to absorb damaging free radicals and anti-inflammatory ingredients to protect skin from environmental stress.

The truth about tanning beds: are tanning beds safe?

Photo of tanning bed from Wikipedia
Are Tanning Beds Safe?
When I bought my house Nashville, the former owners kept a tanning bed set up in the bonus room which they allowed neighbors to use. Tanning beds were thought to be safe, delivering “good UVA rays” while not producing “bad UVB rays” — a misconception that still persists today.

What is Rodan + Fields Reverse and how does Reverse MultiMed therapy work?

Reverse is a complete Multi-Med therapy skincare system created by the dermatologists at Rodan + Fields which combines prescription medicines at non-prescription strength with active cosmetic ingredients to repair and protect hyper-pigmented, sun-damaged skin. Reverse is used to treat people with age spots, hormonal patchiness and melasma.

Reverse for Hyperpigmentation, Sun Spots, Age Spots, Liver Spots, Lentigines & Melasma
Over the course of our lives, sun bathing, tanning beds and repeated sun exposure without sunscreen can make skin dull and leave sun spots, age spots, liver spots, hyperpigmentation, lentigines or melasma by the time we are in our late twenties and older. The accumulated dark pigment is several layers deep into the skin. Over time, these layers of dark pigments begin to appear on the surface of the skin, but much more dark pigment is below the surface. A black light can reveal the next layer of dark pigmentation.

Reverse Multi-Med Therapy
The Reverse MultiMed Therapy regime combines the right ingredients, in the right formulations and in the right order to lighten excessive darkness, brown spots, and uneven pigment. The Reverse MultiMed regime contains skin lightening ingredients including hydroquinone which brighten dull skin, improve tone and texture, and add radiance to the skin. The Reverse regime exfoliates skin to remove dead skin cells to assist cell turnover and remove dullness. It also protects against future sun damage with the Reverse broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen.

Reverse Regime Results
With continued use, the Reverse regime helps skin look more clear and luminous over time, doing away with the need to wear foundation. Over weeks to months the multi-med combination of medicines and active cosmetics have been clinically proven to reduce discoloration, dullness, and dark marks. While everyone's skin is different, most people achieve maximum benefit and see a more radiant, youthful complexion within 2-6 months, depending on how severe the original discoloration was. The goal of the Reverse regime is to get the skin's tone back to it's original tone so that customers no longer need to wear foundation. At that point use of the Reverse cream can be discontinued.

Reverse - Aventura Magazine’s Best of Beauty Choice Award
The Reverse Regimen won Aventura Magazine’s Best of Beauty Choice Awards for Best brown spot remedy and is Recognized on Allure Magazine’s A List.
