Top 4 Benefits of Playing Video Games

Is Video Gaming Bad for You???

While many articles have been written in the past about the harmful effects of playing video games for 30 minutes or more each day, more and more studies are being done that point to the wellness benefits of regular gaming on the brain, eyesight, and surprisingly, mental health as it relates to happiness, self-awareness  and attention span.

Here are four positive results researchers have uncovered from studying video gaming

1.The brain has been shown to get bigger as a result of playing video games.
2. Gamers are actually happier and more self-aware than their non-gaming peers.
3. Gaming can improve eyesight according to some research.
4. Video games can help improve attention issues.

This does not negate the effects of violent games and games that objectify women. Certainly violent games and games that minimize women into bimbos have a negative effect on boys and men, but the other positive results point to the benefits of many games that are free from gratuitous violence and sexual connotations.

Eating Healthy at Murfreesboro Farmers Market

Saturday Market on Main Street in Murfreesboro

July 8 brought the weekly Saturday Farmers Market on the Square to Murfreesboro, TN. Vendors lined the sidewalks on Main Street and around the square with fresh vegetables, meat products, organic soaps, honey and bee pollen, beautiful cut flowers and other delectable and healthy goodies.

Prices for fresh produce compared favorably to grocery stores, often less, and there is something more sensory and satisfying about picking out your veggies from colorful arrays outside in the sunshine. It's nice to support local farmers, too.

There were many varieties of healthy fruits and vegetables on hand including zucchini, tomatoes, corn, broccoli, potatoes, peppers, peaches, onions, cucumbers, lettuce, cabbage and mother produce from local farms. When you buy healthy food, healthy eating just seems to follow naturally.

Walking from booth to booth around the town square is also a good way to get out, get moving and get some light exercise, and if you end up walking back to the car with a big head of cabbage in your bag, you will get a little weight training to boot!.

The Farmers Market on the Square takes place in Murfreesboro at the historic Town Square every Saturday morning from 8 a.m. until noon and is well worth a visit.

Men & Marriage: Debunking the Ball and Chain Myth

What Popular Culture Teaches Men About Marriage Is Not Necessarily True

Marriage is not worth it for men. It’s not worth the practical and financial sacrifices, the lost romantic opportunities, or the “lack of freedom.” All in all, a spouse is a ball and chain—of little benefit to any man interested in pursuing happiness and well-being.

Considering both the latest survey data and the continuing decline in the marriage rate, it’s fair to say that this viewpoint is becoming more entrenched in our society, particularly among younger men.1 But despite its prevalence, the ball and chain view of marriage is simply not supported by the research. Indeed, the benefits of marriage for men are substantial by every conceivable measure, including more money, a better sex life, and significantly better physical and mental health. Yet many men remain ignorant of these benefits, a view seemingly promoted by popular culture.

Read about the health and other many benefits of marriage for me here:

Congress Urged to Combat Zika Virus

U.S. Health Crisis Looming: Malteser International Americas Urges Congress to Reconvene to Combat Zika Virus

Put life-saving work before recess

In a second letter sent to Congressional leaders and the Florida delegation today, Miami-based humanitarian organization Malteser International Americas has called on the U.S. Congress to cut short its summer recess to pass Zika virus prevention and treatment funding without further delay.

"We teach our children to eat their vegetables before they can have dessert. We tell them to finish their homework before meeting up with friends or playing on their smartphones. The protocol for Congress should be no different," said Ravi Tripptrap, Executive Director of Malteser International Americas. "The golf course isn't going anywhere, but the Zika virus is on the move in the United States, first in Florida and now in Illinois. Congress must return to work now."

Malteser International Americas has been on the front lines of the Zika outbreak in northern Colombia since it first became a threat to pregnant women and children, providing Zika Prevention Kits and educating those in the poorest, most forgotten regions where new cases of the mosquito-born disease are diagnosed on a daily basis.

Since the World Health Organization declared the Zika outbreak a global health emergency in February, Congress has taken a backseat, "Not In My Back Yard" approach. With non-travel related cases confirmed in Miami earlier this week and the announcement on Thursday of 46 cases confirmed in Illinois, 8 of whom are pregnant women, it is imperative that Congress act NOW. Zika is being carried into their backyard by mosquitoes, and their most important responsibility is to protect the health and safety of United States citizens.

In the meantime, people living in potentially affected areas shout consider investing in good mosquito repellent.

National Dog Appreciation Day: Dogs and health - Nashville Skin Care Examiner

 Happy National Dog Appreciation Day!

Wednesday, Aug. 26 is National Dog Appreciation Day, and Tennessee has been ranked the #4 most "Dog Happy" U.S. state, according to the Milo's Kitchen 'Dog Happy' Survey.

Other studies indicate that being a "Dog Happy" state should make Tennessee a healthier state, and yet Nashville was recently ranked #5 'Unhealthiest City' in America.

I have been a dog lover ever since I was rescued by a papillon 20 years ago. I didn't think I wanted or needed a dog, but she quickly showed me the error of my ways, so I can attest to the many health benefits of being owned by a dog.

After my first papillon, Miss Katy,  died at 17, I was devastated by her loss and quickly got another little dog for my emotional well being and even physical wellness.
